Inuyasha nodded, hyperaware of the woman standing in line behind him. His heart was beating so loudly, the pulse of it echoed in his ears.
With a flourish, Kagome grabbed at the still-empty cup with his name scribbled on it, and grinned. “You’ve got yourself a deal.”
Koga, his arch-nemesis, was a dick. Miroku, his best friend, was a lying liar. And now, Inuyasha needed a fake girlfriend for his office's holiday party. Wonderful.

Inuyasha growls then, golden eyes glaring at the ceiling like it personally offended him. “I’ll pay you, for fuck’s sake,” he grits out. Kagome can’t help but feel like she’s entered some new reality. Douchebag extraordinaire who eats all her chips is now begging for her to be his fake girlfriend? And he’s going to pay her for it?
Kagome opens her mouth and says the first thing she thinks of. She’s not proud of it. “You realize you have to be nice to a girlfriend, right? Or is that why you’re still single?”
Kagome and Inuyasha aren't exactly friends. Friend-adjacent, at best. And yet, when Inuyasha's mother comes to town, he comes to her with a proposition. Date him, get paid. It does not go as planned.

Slowly, excruciatingly slowly, Inuyasha starts to creep closer to the fire at night. Now that he's not so injured, he's begun to vanish into the woods and come back to throw down rabbits and once a badger at the side of the hut, and Kagome hasn't had to worry about finding enough to eat as the air starts to turn colder. He hardly ever talks to them, or at all, and he won't come close enough to touch- he never comes as close as he had that first day again, but he stays.
She's not sure why he stays, but she's glad that he does.
