The collection was nicknamed “Levi’s Boyfriend” by the Director of Education (and frequent night shift supervisor), Hange Zoe, but even their teasing couldn’t keep Levi from spending most of his free time obsessing over the seven paintings in the exhibit. If only he could track down the faceless model and demand his help in creating a final project for his Master’s in Sculpture degree… Maybe the cute museum curator knew where to find him.

Levi's eyes went wide for a second as he choked over a breath. The raven averted his eyes and his ears turned pink, which Erwin found impossibly cute. Sasha made a noise that she tried to hide by shoving her hand against her mouth, like she knew what he’d asked. He waited until Levi nervously looked back at him.
Or I can go, if you’d like. I didn’t mean to intrude. I know this wasn’t my seat.
Levi's mouth dropped open before he shook his head.
You’re sitting in it, so it’s definitely your seat. And, yes, I would like that. Levi rested his hands on the table before quickly pulling them back up. I’d like that very much.

Levi has always admired the Commander, it was as simple as that, as plain as that. Until, of course, his Commander's rut triggers his heat. The most logical answer to such a scenario is to endure their respective cycles together. After their biology sees the situation through, it feels like an understatement to say only that he admires his Commander.

The ones that had haunted his dreams for years. Eyes he could never forget, no matter how hard he tried. No matter how much blood or whiskey he used to wash them away. A man carried them, tall and charming, unsettling in a way that told he knew what Levi had done, so many years ago.

“I’m not fucking dying for them,” He says, scathing and unhinged. He barely registers saying it, it seems to bubble up, revealing. Those noblemen who spat at his very existence - who tricked him with sweet nothings into getting his friends killed. Who wouldn’t give him a second glance if he was dying in the street. He’s not giving up his life to fund their future.
“Then don't,” Erwin says, with such simplicity it makes Levi rabid.
You’d never understand
“Live for me” He steps forward and Levi finds himself stepping back, eyes wide but glued to Erwin’s, breath frantic.

“Can I trust you, Levi?”, Erwin murmurs, after, head to his back and water running cold between them.
He didn’t use to ask, before.
“Who else would you fucking trust”, Levi gets out, skin breaking in goosebumps. Erwin hums behind him.
“Who indeed”, he mutters.
Levi understands anger. He’s intimate with it. He understands Erwin thought a lot of his sacrifice and that to have this opportunity at the expense of all that sacrifice probably feels like an unforgivable sin. It fractured something fundamental between them. Most sacrifices do. Levi did not save him because he saw some hope for them; world peace and a happily ever after. He did it because he knew, in his heart, Erwin was only one black hearted enough to see this through.
Maybe that’s love; to see the absolute worst in someone and see it as salvation, still.
It doesn’t really matter anyway. Erwin is still dying, just slower.

“Wait?” Erwin swivels his head around between the man and his cat. He moves too fast, disturbing the Levi on his shoulder. The cat leaps from Erwin down into the trunk to curl up amongst the soft white polyester. “Your name is Levi?”
The man sneers at Erwin. “Got a problem with my name?”
“No, no. It’s just that’s the name of my cat, is all.”
At that, Levi snorts and crosses his arms. “Shitty name for a cat if you ask me.”
And that’s when Erwin notices that Levi is also holding a leash. His eyes follow the green cord down to the ground to spy the same cat as before, only this time the white cat is bundled up in a puffer jacket that matches his leash and harness.
Mouth now hanging open, Erwin asks. “Is that your cat?”

Summary
It becomes easier, after the events at the riverbank, for Levi to trust Erwin.
Erwin never gets in Levi’s way, letting him perform his spells and rituals out in the open without judgment. He doesn’t pry, doesn’t ask to be taught, but instead observes and only offers to help where he can. Levi is appreciative of Erwin’s regard for his space, and finds himself slowly growing accustomed to having another person with him in the solace of his woods.
Levi has an affinity for plants, Erwin discovers. He watches as Levi heals the delicate stems of baby’s breath and coaxes stubborn lilacs to bloom. Under the light of a full moon, Erwin is granted the privilege of observing Levi’s protection rituals around the forest. He finds himself mesmerized by the fireflies and moths that flock to Levi’s hands, accepting droplets of magic like rain before fluttering back into the woods — depositing magical charms throughout the glen.
It’s more than Erwin could have ever imagined, hoped, to find in a witch.
