Summary
Akechi Goro, a twenty-one-year-old alleged “former television star” and actual unstable cokehead, has been involuntarily committed to Kōsei Recovery Institute—a rural rehabilitation center for young men struggling with substance abuse and mental health issues—for twenty-three out of his ninety days when his new roommate arrives.
Hollow-eyed and half outside his body, a twenty-year-old withdrawing opioid dealer named Kurusu Akira is assigned to the program after a possession with intent charge and a history of delinquency and violence. He goes through the motions and nods at socially acceptable intervals and practices courtesy without performance.
By any clinical measure, they are entirely incompatible. A specific, irresistible knowledge keeps them nipping at each other’s heels, to progressive degrees of intensity.
