"Infection sets in somewhere above the Esben Mountains.
It's always cold when flying, even wrapped in flight leathers, but this shivering is more ravenous, somehow, an underlying and almost untouchable heat lying far beneath it that I know has to be a fever."
—Pretty scene starter; situation and location
    —'ravenous shivering', 'untouchable heat'

"To both my immense relief and disappointment, Liam does not visit me again."

"The world, while still sore, is almost unbearably soft around me. Xaden’s clothes, warm and smelling of him. Xaden’s sheets, the covers fluffed up around my chin from how he’d fussed to make sure I was comfortable. Xaden, finding his way into the bed behind me. The sun is setting outside the window, and I realize I have no idea what time it is. I think I should ask, but the words fail me as his arms tug me gently, so gently, back into his chest, his bicep sliding under my head."
—Touch, smell, sight. Warmth, Xaden, the sun. Perfect imagery.
    —Rhythm in final line

"When I wake hours later, it’s dark and I’m back in the basement of Basgiath. Varrish stands over me, a blade in his hand. He’s going to carve into my stomach, again."
    —11, 12 near-rhyme

"He tucked her inside of his jacket. There wasn’t much room, but she was warm. The machines started growling again, and the little cat felt like they were moving. But she was warm and secure in her new spot, just as comfortable as before. The little cat fell asleep."

"Rumbling. The human was speaking...The hand below her shifted, and the cocoon she was wrapped in split in two. She landed on the floor, and went off to explore."

"Curious, Violet approaches. She sniffs at the piece of leather he is holding. A collar, she realises, remembering seeing her brother and sister wearing them before. She never had one, because Violet was never wanted. She had never had a name before, either. It was always runt, or little cat. Not something pretty like Violet. She lets the human fasten it around her neck, and decides to make this house her home."

    Bookmarker's Notes

"Fear no more the heat o' the sun,
    Nor the furious winter's rages;
Thou thy worldly task hast done,
Home art gone, and ta'en thy wages:
Golden lads and girls all must,
    As chimney-sweepers, come to dust."
    —From Cymbeline
    —The golden lad is Achilles?
—What does death liberate Zagreus from? He cannot die. Or is this only in reference to Achilles?

"wordly task hast done...ta'en thy wages"
—Achilles is dead, but Hades returns him to his 'worldy tasks", as punishment. In spite of his achievements in the war, even as a man favoured by the gods, he must "come to dust". Be reduced to a shade as any other mortal.

"To thee the reed is as the oak"
—To you there is no difference between the reed (the weak) and the oak (the strong)

    "The scepter, learning, physic, must"
—The scepter (strength) and learning (knowledge) and physic (the body? health?)

"Ghost unlaid forbear thee!/Nothing ill come near thee!"
    —Unlaid; Not prepared for burial
    —Forbear; Refrain, abstain
—Ghosts/spirits that have no yet been laid to rest, will refrain from troubling your grave
—Why was this the title for the one-shot? The one from Pedasus is the spirit? Contrary to the line, Achilles is haunted by the ghosts of his past (or his life, more accurately).

"I knew him from boyhood. Circumstances led us to becoming soldiers - well, some would say it was the decree of the gods. Would that I had taken the other path offered me, a long and quiet life, but I think the gods make those deals knowing full well that no young man is going to settle for peace."

"Achilles is watching one of the leaves swirl along the river, slipping under the soft current and poking up again further down."

"Golden-haired, swift-footed, lion-hearted Achilles, leader of men, alike to the gods, is asking the petty, recalcitrant prince of the underworld if he can see past his flaws. It should beggar belief."
    —IT SHOULD BEGGAR BELIEF!!
—Beggar (verb); To cripple, to ruin.
—Disbelief in Achilles' need for Zagreus' approval
    —Beautiful rhythm

“What puerile game is this?” Hades snarls. “If this is an attempt to provoke mercy, I assure you, there is none to be had."
    —Puerile; childish, immature

"Achilles would pretend to look impressed every time, bend down to make eye contact and ask him to recount the tale, remaining in rapt attention until Zagreus was finished. ‘Here comes the champion,’ he would greet him afterward, bowing in deep respect as Zagreus laughed. It hurts to think about now."
—Captures Achilles' voice so well. Kind. Here comes the champion. Kind, and loves the prince. But Zagreus takes Achilles' kindness for entertaining a simple child. Hurts to read.
—Describes Achilles' adoration for the prince, his actions, his emotions, what he says, and then finally, Zagreus' happiness. From a too-happy memory to Zagreus' self-realisation in the present-day.

    Summary

Before the young god-prince learns of his mother and plots his escape, Zagreus wishes for a bit of earth to plot a garden.

The prince consults Achilles, of all souls, about the act of growing things. Asks for Achilles to describe to him the plants and flowers and trees of the surface world, from the shape of their leaves to their texture and smell. Asks how deep the roots of trees go, what it is like to sit beneath their shade, and listens raptly to all Achilles says of the worms and beetles who live in the dirt.

“I’m afraid I rather took it all for granted.” Achilles admits, ashamed, one day-or-night as Zagreus sits cross-legged on the floor of his chambers patiently while Achilles tries, and fails, to draw a passable image of an olive tree on a sheet of parchment.

    Bookmarker's Notes

"There is no justifiable reason for Achilles to say such a thing—it is foolish at best. Cruel, at worst. There is no reason for him to have said it, except that Achilles wishes it to be true. Except that he hopes—beyond all reason, out of some ill-advised sentimentality—the Prince of the Underworld might come to know what earthly dirt feels like on his hands, might feel the softness of a peony’s petals against his cheek, or know the sweetness of plucking a spring bloom for a lover’s hair.

A bit of earth. How small a thing to want, how tremendous a thing to have. Is it not?"
—"Ill-advised sentimentality" Achilles is nostalgic for the mortal experience. He wishes for Zagreus to experience the same. Sentimental. He wishes to share the feeling of earth and nature, and the pure joy of living it. (Author describes the sensations, then the emotions. Wraps up with such a pretty conclusion. Earth—and love for nature. A simple joy—but earth is the creation of gods.)

"One day-or-night the plant is reported to be in excellent health, and the next on the cusp of extinction. It then follows that Zagreus believes any moment, now, the little sprout is due to bloom into a bouquet of flowers. What color they might be, Zagreus cannot decide. When it becomes clear that no such blooms are, in fact, forthcoming, Zagreus takes this as a portent of doom."
    —Just really beautiful writing

"All power seeks to be claimed; wielded, set to its purpose. Could Achilles have ever refused his feet their flight, across fields and roads and beaches? Did not Achilles feel Varatha’s will when he put his hands upon it? Will he not sense something wild and yearning in the bloodstones Zagreus coaxes from the earth?"
—Scene starts not with physical description but instead, what is essentially a thesis for Zagreus' domain. Power is inevitable.

Zagreus explains this without inflection, as if by feigning indifference he will make it true.
—Pretty way of saying that Zagreus is trying his best to be nonchalant.

    Klastos. Unbroken, stubborn one.
