she could see the way his face was set. like he was trying, trying his hardest to feel something. the girl said something else with a gentle smile, batting thick lashes that jinx could see even from her post. his eyes weren’t guarded, weren’t annoyed or distant. there was effort in them.
she'd seen that face before. the face of a man forcing something that just didn't fit.

stares, until she can see the tremble in his hands; the way his lashes clump together at the edges, like he still wants to cry. the damn-near unbearable warmth of him— of ekko, ekko, ekko, all tangled up in the mess of her, of jinx; fingers curling against her with the kind of selfishness that makes her think he was never going to learn his lesson.

Powder steps over a puddle, glancing down at the shimmery reflection of herself. In her own face, she sees exactly how she feels; a scared girl, grown up faster than she was ever a child, still forever grieving a loss so overwhelming it has shaped the very essence of her being, driven her to strange lands chasing what might just be a fairytale, too good to be true, forever out of her reach.
Then, her reflection glitches, and Powder flinches away from the puddle as bright violet eyes stare right back at her with a sorrow so deep it pierces right through her like a knife, only disappearing when she kicks at the water and shoves right past it. No time for reflections; she has family to find.

"Like a twisted remake of the end of their last fight, Ekko steps in just as Jinx pulls the pin of a bomb – a more powerful, deadlier version of the bomb she’d used then to try and blow both of them up. He sees it happen nearly in slow-motion; her lonely silhouette in the middle of the fan blade-bridge, hair chopped short, head bowed; ripping herself to shreds before his eyes in a flash of bright blue and pink light. His hand yanks the Z-drive handle before he can even gasp, and green light flares out of it, undoing the pink and blue; Jinx’s pallid skin knits itself back together, the pin returns to the bomb and her dark Shimmer-pink eyes open back up, finger about to pull."
Eventual smut, lots of angst, hurt/comfort, and two traumatised young adults trying to figure out if and how they can make their way back to each other.

It’s like playing dress up, like they used to, because Vi wouldn’t ever. She strips him past his jacket to a tank top and pants and she traces the contractions of muscle under his arms where veins travel and converge with paint on her fingers.
Ekko’s skin is more warm and alive than hers is anymore.
For her he leaves splotches and swirls of paint all over. Arms, legs, chest, back. Into her side he sears a huge blue star. The pink under her cheeks count as another encounter with closeness and his eyes again. Only a small amount of it is rubbed away by a sweaty fist and laughter.
She stands with both arms out, “Are you trying to mark me?”
