Fate and souls may not exist, but Dan can't deny that he and Phil must be bound on a cosmic level. There's always a downside to this kind of connection, though. When you intertwine your life with someone else's so much that you don't know where one ends and the other begins anymore, the downfall is bound to be disastrous. Like nuclear fission, an explosion will follow.

During a depressive episode, Dan starts thinking about how strange it is that water is necessary for human survival, but can also be deadly in so many ways (waterborne illnesses, flooding, accidental drownings, etc.). The more he thinks about this, the more his mental and physical health start to deteriorate. Phil doesn't understand Dan's obsession with water at first. By the time he realizes what's going on, damage has already been done.
