Now here Watson is, supporting himself on the table with one hand. The other gripping Holmes’ shoulder. Holmes has a grip on Watson's tie and is kissing Watson as if he is starving. Holmes tastes of the sweet wine they drank with their meal and the noises he's making as they kiss are somehow even sweeter.

Watson's breath hitches as Holmes’ hand skates down from his tie to cup the bulge in his trousers.

“Oh goodness,” it comes out as breathless as one can imagine. “Holmes…”

It is my custom, you may have noticed, to save those little cases which we have solved until such time as danger to those involved has passed, or until Holmes otherwise suggests I may write about them.

The happenings at Hurlstone Hall, however, received a very different treatment indeed.

After writing up the case of The Devil's Foot, Watson reflects on some other memories from his seaside holiday, where a near-death experience brought revelations to the surface.

"That elusive emotion which hid behind corners in the chambers of the heart. I caught glimpses of it in Holmes’s upturned lips as we attended the opera, his fingers clasping my arm as we walked in the street, his feet leisurely brushing against mine under the breakfast table at 221B. Mostly, I knew of this feeling because I felt something within myself respond to Holmes’s signals. A fugitive seeking out his comrade from two darkened windows across a street."

With hindsight, it was all so painfully inevitable.

Too often, for Watson, the past is near enough to touch.
