Summary
Jinshi has always sparkled for others, but Maomao has never been mesmerized by it. It was just another thing she was immune to. Now here he was, not particularly sparkly, just obviously in love, and Maomao felt what she could only describe as being enraptured.
Maomao knew she needed to say thank you, but at this moment she did not trust her tongue with words. She was afraid something rather mushy would come to her if she tried to speak, and she wasn’t ready for that yet. Which felt silly to acknowledge - that she had married this man, but was struggling to love him.
And it was not loving him - Maomao had deduced this now. It had almost nothing to do with Jinshi at all. Her constipation with regards to her own ability to love had nothing to do with her commitment to him, either. She cared for and admired him deeply, more than she had anyone else, except maybe Loumen. Maomao hopes someday she is able to admit that to him, but she is still accepting that it is even safe to admit to herself.

Summary
They say Jinshi is dead, but Maomao had seen him two nights prior. She had heard his heart beating beneath her ear, his hands, warm and large, soothing circles on her back through a blanket. Looking at her with soft eyes like kindling embers, he was so alive. She felt it too, when his mouth grazed her temple, gentle and kind.
When she sees Chue waiting on the bench outside the clinic, unnaturally somber, she understands. Quietly, the other woman tells her the truth, which is no different from the rumors.
Or, a brief view of Maomao's thoughts and actions following Jinshi's untimely death.

The moon briefly peered out from it's hiding place to illuminate the garden, showing the red flush coloring in Jinshi's face. It was Maomao's turn to roll her eyes at his bashfulness. Not only had significant time passed to soften the more embarrassing elements of that evening after the first visit to the Western Capital, but they'd been married now for over a decade. She'd had his children. He'd done far more salacious things to her by now. Yet, he still stuttered out a mortified sounding, "Well, you know…"
Maomao hummed noncommittal, leaning back on her palms and turning her face up to the sky. "Do I? Perhaps my memory is failing, as well."
