Hockey is a very fun sport because you are allowed to hit people. Sometimes, being trans made Ilya's life hard, annoying. For some reason the only way he feels comfortable settling that feeling is by punching someone as hard as he can and not getting in trouble for it.
Ilya knows his life would be easier if he loved himself more.
Shane knows he has never been perceived accurately his whole life. Ilya had to go on hormones to get to that point, but he knows that isn't what Shane needs, anyway.

He wonders if somewhere written among his freckles is the number of times that Shane’s intrusive thoughts have imagined the man before him in lewd scenarios. He wonders if his mouth --already disconnected from his conscious mind-- secretly whispers confessions of his fantasies in a devastating betrayal of the self.
Shane swallows. The two blue eyes are so fucking close that they could each be a mile wide. They could be barrels of a gun or the tips of arrows. They’re trained on Shane and call on his animalistic reactions of fight or flight.
Or fawn.
Shane Hollander was diagnosed with autism as a child. With delayed speech, sensory difficulties, and a brain that refused to conform, Shane grew up always finding ways to cope using hockey, systems, and routine. After temporarily losing his speech in a very public meltdown at the world juniors, Shane is forced to carve a path as the first publicly autistic player in the NHL, accommodations and all.
Chronic surprise Ilya Rozanov is determined to prove to Shane that he isn't a problem to be solved, while both men must learn to accept that they're worthy of love at all.

When Shane arrives in his office with a University of Boston Athletics branded backpack, Ilya’s mind is all but made up about the star hockey player. However, as the semester progresses, Ilya begins to think he may have been too quick to judge.

In late 2012 when Shane has a meltdown and frantically tells them to call Lily, for the first time Yuna’s ever witnessed, Shane is coaxed out of one of them instead of just suffering through until the exhaustion wins out instead—and all by some mysterious, apparently very well attuned to Shane, 'Lily'.
She hadn’t meant to see the number before she’d pressed it and fumbled the phone up to Shane’s ear. It was simply a byproduct of the situation, something Shane had asked for her to do.
…Memorizing it and then texting that number to thank Lily for their help was not something she’d been asked to do. But she worries so much about Shane, and Lily is a reassurance. Not a pry for details but the simple, verifiable confirmation: he’s okay.
Lily, on the other hand, very much enjoys being able to make oddly specific 'your mother' jokes to Shane much more often now. (And maybe the whole family piece of it, too.)
