And she understands then that he's scared, too. He’s the one who’s seen her through all of it, who knows her better than she knows herself sometimes. Jack loves her, and she knows he’s terrified of hurting her, of pushing too hard, of undoing the careful healing of the past three months.

Summary
It’s not that Samira doesn’t hear Jack when he comes in. She does: the muted jangle of his keys, the snick of the door closing. She’s just halfway in his fridge, is all, blearily rooting around for Greek yogurt and berries she hopes against hope haven’t begun to fuzz, so it isn’t until he greets her with “well, aren’t you up early,” that she turns and realizes he isn’t alone.
“Is that Baby Jane Doe?”

Summary
“Wait,” Trin said slowly. “Wait a fucking minute.”
Mel looked between them, baffled. “Are you playing house with Zaddy Night Shift?” Trinity said, glee breaking across her face.
“Who is Zaddy Night Shift?” Mel asked, at least two decibels louder than the entire previous conversation. Princess started walking over. Samira put her face in her hands. “I am Zaddy Night Shift,” Dr. Ellis said, breezing by. “And I don’t play house. I provide a loving home for the right woman.”
“My heart belongs to another, king.” Trinity said absently. Mel looked at her in confusion. “Not you, Melancholy.”
“I do not understand what’s happening.” Mel announced cheerfully.

“I’ll move with you.”
“Jack… Your whole life is here.”
They talked. And talked, and talked. He stood there, vulnerable, honest like an open book, and, as if it were an unbreakable mathematical constant, he continued to offer her his heart in his outstretched hands.
“Since my wife died, my whole life has been filled with unhealthy coping mechanisms, night shifts, and mornings spent on the edge of the roof. You are my new, incredible life, and I’ll never leave it. Unless you want me to…”
And she didn’t want him to. She took him with her and grew happier with each passing day.

Summary
“I’m so sorry,” she blurted out, wanting desperately to explain this away, rushing forward before jumping back, not sure what approach was best. “So sorry-”
“What for?”
“Jack, my blood is all over you! It looks like a horror movie in here!”
He actually has the audacity to roll his eyes during what would certainly become a recurring stress dream for her. “It’s not toxic.”
“No, but-”
“You’re not secretly squeamish about blood, are you?” There is a mischievous tilt to his gaze, lips, brows. “How have you made it through residency?”
It was her turn to roll her eyes, and roll them she did.a.k.a. Dr. Samira Mohan gets her period earlier than expected while over at Dr. Jack Abbot's house.

Summary
You hadn’t seen Robby in almost three years. Three years since he’d ripped your heart out of your chest and ground it down with a self-righteous indignation he had no real claim to. And now, in what felt like a cruel act of God—one that only reinforced the idea that if God existed, he had a personal vendetta against you—you were thrown back together, jointly responsible for keeping a young man alive and keeping the carceral system that tried to kill him from finishing the job.

Summary
"We crossed a line, didn't we? And I don't want to go back." Jack's voice is low, quiet in the shell of her ear, more of a rumble than anything else.
His finger traces the curve of her waist, the dip of her navel, the ridges of her ribcage. They didn’t use protection. Neither of them asked. They are both board certified in emergency medicine; all risks they take are calculated. They have been avoiding this moment for years now, brakes squealing on a freight train, barreling towards a car stuck on the tracks.

“If I give you this camera, can you take photos throughout the week, I’ll get it back and make a cool video out of it?” She outstretches her hand to Samira, proffering a green and black Fujifilm Quicksnap.
Samira replies with a smile, “I’m not sure our lives are very interesting, but yeah, sure.”
“What are your names?”
“I’m Samira,” she replies, Jack supplies his name with a gentle nod.

Summary
The pregnancy had been unplanned.
Children were never a concrete part of her plan. For so much of her life, her one goal was to become a doctor, to save lives, and it was so all-consuming that there was never room for anything else. The future that she had imagined for herself as a freshman in college was always set under the fluorescent lights of a trauma room. The other parts of it, the life she would have outside of her work, was always fuzzy at best. Jack had been the lovely surprise at the end of her residency, knocking on her door the day she graduated, flowers in his hand and his heart on his sleeve.
She would have never dreamed up Jack Abbot for herself all those years ago in her freshman dorm room, yet here he was, making her life better in every way that mattered.
So she can’t help but allow herself to start to imagine a life with a child, half of him and half of her.

Summary
She’s standing by the Hub, chatting with Dana, when Jack steps out of the exam room next to the bathroom. His mind immediately lights up. Samira Mohan is pregnant, and no one here knows.
“There he is,” Dana says as she catches sight of him. “We were just talking about you.”
Samira raises her brows, and he wants to kiss her right here in the middle of the bullpen. He doesn’t, of course, but he wants to, and Samira seems to know what he’s thinking because she shakes her head, half-grinning. “About me?” He asks.
“About house hunting,” Samira clarifies. “And your total aversion to fixer-uppers.”
“You can buy houses that are already fixed up,” Jack says. He is a grown man. He makes a good salary as an attending physician. Jack is not interested in being his own contractor. He’s not in Ortho.

“I’m going to be a mom,” Mel whispers, sounding awed. Samira looks at her and sees Mel’s wet smile. She laughs and reaches over to hug her friend.
“You’re going to be an amazing mom!” she laughs. “Oh my God, this is so exciting! Langdon's going to be so happy, I just know it!”
Mel’s eyes go wide again.
“Oh God, we’re going to have to actually tell everyone we’re together now!”
Or: Mel's pregnancy through the eyes of her (sometimes incredibly oblivious) coworkers.
