Shane cooking for him in their kitchen, offering his creation up for Ilya’s judgement. Maybe there would be a nice playlist on. Maybe the pasta would be actual pasta, not chickpea. Maybe they’d be cooking for more than just the two of them. Christ.
Balancing on the cusp of a something new, Ilya boards a flight to Shane's cottage for two weeks.

Ilya is about to exchange Boston for the suburbs of Ottawa, and everything is fine. He’s definitely looking forward to moving to a city that’s notorious for being boring as hell. He’s also coping spectacularly well with how oppressively quiet his new surroundings are, because it’s not like his most anxious thoughts amplify in the silence. Oh, and Shane wants to come over and celebrate Ilya’s birthday with him in his half-furnished house? That’s fine, too.
He’ll be fine. Everything will be fine.

Ilya has always been good at reading his husband, and as he replays that night in Vegas in his head, the heated look on Shane’s face, the moans and gasps and begs pulled from his lips, he is sure he hadn’t got it wrong.
But Ilya can’t reconcile his memory of that night with the look of fear on Shane’s face just a couple of hours ago.
Although Ilya hadn't meant to, it was almost the same setup; he had recreated Vegas in their own bedroom.
He was fully dressed, watching from a chair at a distance, as Shane lay on a large, empty bed entirely naked and gave Ilya a show.
Ilya feels sick at the thought that he was wrong that night, that Shane had hated it, hadn't wanted it, but went along with whatever Ilya had ordered.Or Ilya unintentionally recreates that night, Shane spooks a little at the memory of 'we didn't even kiss', and Ilya spirals completely.

Summary
For as long as Shane has been playing professional hockey, he has been studying Ilya Rozanov. It happened without him realizing. It's not like he sat down and put pen to paper, making notes of everything he knew about Ilya Rozanov. It's still unbelievable to him that he gets to see every version of him, all the parts of himself he doesn't show to the world that only wants to see him as a cocky player with a devil-may-care attitude. Shane counts himself lucky that he gets to see Ilya's soft side, his grumpiness when he doesn't get enough sleep, his sappy eyes when he wakes up beside Shane.
But there are some things about Ilya that Shane worries he will never know, that rest on the other side of some great gulf he cannot cross. Shane, who grew up untouched by the kind of tragedy that shaped the arc of Ilya's life, who sometimes feels overwhelmed at the depth of everything Ilya gave up for him, at the bravery it took for him to love Shane like it's the most natural thing in the world.
As he thinks about the future he wants with Ilya, Shane realizes he may need to better understand Ilya's past.
