    Summary

Nancy was happy to be their whispered nightmare, the monster at the edge of the trees, their source of salvation.

Still, some days it got… lonely. For a girl who had grown up always surrounded by people–attendants, courtiers, fake-friends and aristocrats–most of the time it was peaceful. But sometimes the itch started under her skin, clawing her open from within, and when the feeling reached a fever pitch, unbearable and uncontainable, she came here.

    Summary

    Robin looks... pretty. Really pretty.

The thought should scare her, but it doesn’t, because the alcohol is thrumming behind her ribs and buzzing beneath her skin, liquid courage taking form.

She decides to admire. She thinks she deserves it, just this once.

Or: Robin stumbles upon Nancy at the Halloween party rather than Jonathon. From there, a strange yet profound friendship forms between the two of them. Robin yearns for more and Nancy aches deep inside.

“You know what I mean,” Robin pleaded. “You keep cornering me, appearing out of thin air for these drive-by make-outs, then vanishing like a… a sexy ghost!”

Nancy’s brows bounced in slight amusement.

“You keep running away from me,” Robin said, softer now.

Nancy paused at that. “That’s why you locked me in here? So I couldn’t run?”

“Whoa, okay—don’t say it like that. Makes it sound… predatory.” Robin scratched the back of her neck, her eyes flicking toward the padlock. “You can leave if you want. Just to be clear.”

Hawkins is in ruins. The gang is surviving in a bunker. Nancy is composed on the surface, yet slightly troubled underneath. Robin is just... underneath Nancy a lot.

    Summary

Robin loudly slurps her strawberry milkshake, red straw puckered between her lips. A little leftover sits in the dip of her bottom lip.

Nancy drops her gaze to the table.

"So," she starts quietly, swallowing down her doubt—the uncontrollable skip in her chest each time their knees brush. "Are you gonna let me try strawberry, or...?"

Robin looks up at her, eyes wide—expectant. The straw falls out of her mouth.

"Or—" Nancy stumbles a little. "Let me suffer with vanilla forever."

Robin blinks. "Uh—yeah, of course. Try away. I can get you a spare straw if—"

But Nancy is already sliding the glass across the table, cool against her fingertips, and taking Robin's wet straw into her mouth.

The Upside Down is gone, but Nancy still can't sleep... unless one Robin Buckley is next to her.

    She doesn't know why.

    Summary

She fights a smile. While she loves this enthusiasm for her more laughable notions, she’s also scared of it. Robin makes recklessness look so easy. Like. Maybe Nancy could jump out of a plane someday. Or publish a novel, or talk about trauma, or go to a gay club; literally anything else that she’s sort of terrified to do.

Set after the epilogue. Nancy Wheeler struggles to recover from her burnout at Emerson. Journalism helps, but can still feel limiting due to the need of a paycheck. Following a recommendation from her therapist, she tries to write one poem a week. It doesn’t have to be good, or fancy, or even more than a sentence. It just has to be real.

Between sleepless nights, monthly meet-ups that aren’t quite enough, and calls that rack up her phone bill, Nancy pens more than one piece inspired by Robin Buckley.
