On a July evening in 1954, Elio Perlman sets down a kerosene lamp in the spare room of his family’s beach bungalow in Montauk. Everything is ready for when the train will bring in their summer guest. Will this Oliver from Chicago, an aspiring photographer, get bored in the simple fishing village that is so close to Manhattan but has none of its lures? After all, all they ever do here is read, write, and go clamming. Oh, and swim naked.
“Do you think one could be happy here?” He glanced back at me and I didn’t know where the question had come from, but it felt like a morsel of something I’d wanted when I’d brought him out here. I nodded, then again. “Yes.”
