After Thomas receives news of Richard’s engagement, he stops writing letters, feeling like a fool for ever thinking there was finally someone for him, something between them. He begins reverting to his old ways, feeling more out of place at Downton than ever, desperate for a sense of belonging before he spirals into worthlessness. When the film crew arrives and Guy Dexter offers him a way out, Thomas almost makes the worst mistake of his life - but Richard won’t let him go that easily.

While I do think the idea of Richard Ellis being a fleeting love interest for Thomas was more realistic, I enjoyed their chemistry too much and was not happy with A New Era, so this is a kind of rewrite - but only of the Thomas storyline, of course. A (properly) happy ending for the silly boy (his words, not mine).

“I might’ve,” Thomas said icily, finally breaking eye contact to ash his fag in the tray, “What’s it to you?”
“You haven’t!” Jimmy clutched his warming glass and searched Thomas for any tells he was bluffing. Thomas looked back up at him coolly, unwaveringly. Oh piss. “When?!”
