Summary
“You said this was about ‘mundane legal matters’?” Grace prompts.
“Yes.” The Attorney confirms, digging through his leather briefcase. “It took some time for things to get settled what with the wedding and the subsequent funerals and all, but the estate is finally ready for you to take the reins.”
“The estate? What estate? I abdicated the high seat.”
“Yes, well… like I said, these are entirely mundane legal proceedings. This has nothing to do with Mr. Le Bail or the High Council.” He hands Grace a packet of paper, waiting for her to scan over it before continuing. “Even in the absence of Mr. Le Bail’s favor, the Danforth family fortune is considerably immense, especially for a woman of your…” The Attorney trails off, eyeing Grace and Faith’s depressing poor people apartment. “Economic circumstances.”
“Wait,” Grace sputters, flipping through the paperwork. “I don’t get it. Why would I inherent the Danforth family fortune?”
“Well, you are the last remaining Danforth.” The attorney explains simply. As though it’s so simple.

A loud buzzing sounds between her ears. It drowns out the ED, the commentary of the other nurses as Ahmad hits play on a video cued up from a local news’ YouTube channel that reads HOSTAGE SITUATION AT PITTSBURGH BANK in the lower chyron.
The video shows a shaky camera zoomed way far in as, yeah, that’s definitely Jack, walking toward the front doors of a Philly First National branch with his hands held up in surrender.

Summary
Jack and Samira are two healers who have lived through more loss than they ever speak about. Two people, broken in their own ways, learning how to exist in the same space without saying what matters most.
This isn’t just about three seconds of eye contact at the Pitt.
It’s about the silence that has always said more than words ever could.

With her senses so preoccupied, she doesn't register the presence of someone else. Not at first. Not until she feels the warmth of another body settling down right next to her.
In her eyeline she catches a glimpse of two legs outstretched beside her. A pair of the dorkiest brown hiking shoes she's ever seen. One socked ankle, one metal ankle.
Abbot.

Titus grasped you by the chin and forced you to look up at him.
“Your entire family must be eradicated by sunrise. That’s inevitable, written in blood.” His eyes looked you up and down, curious, “But killing you feels like a waste.”
“You aren’t going to kill me?”
He shrugged. “I might have to. But there’s one other way to end your bloodline. You leave your family and marry into mine.”
“This is a proposal?”

His face comes into focus then: hazel eyes watching her with an expression she doesn’t recognize, grey hair damp and curling.
“That’s it,” he says. “You with me?”
She nods, the movement slightly hindered by the hand still cupping her face. He leaves it there as he slides the other up to press two fingers to her carotid. She’s watched him perform miracles with these hands—has seen him blind cric a patient without an ounce of hesitation—but she realizes now that he is shaking.

Summary
Abbot is all restraint, all talk and no bite. Samira knows he's been flirting with her, because she'd discovered weeks ago she's been flirting right back.
And if you think about it -
Eight months is a long time with just her fingers.
"Jack." Samira says and the reaction it elicits immediately sets her heart pounding. Dr. Abbot - Jack - inhales sharply, eyes widening. He takes a step forward, pure instinct driven, before stopping himself. And, oh. There's a power that she suddenly feels, coursing through her veins and setting her blood on fire.
"Walk me home?"

“Rural medicine is not actually a specialty, Dr. Mohan. It’s a location.” Abbot still doesn't look away from his monitor. His admonishment of visiting physicians is second nature.
Santos gestures to the Christmas tree in the corner with her pen. There's a single cowboy boot sitting under it, a shiny plastic bow stuck to the toe. “It’s a state of mind.”
After finishing her residency, Samira goes where all directionless doctors must. West Virginia.

Summary
“You know, I think we have this tendency to think of chaos as a bad thing. Like, if something’s chaotic it must be harmful, and it must be changed, or…ordered. But I think chaos itself is…natural, you know? The world around us thrives on chaos. Small changes make big differences. The butterfly effect, I guess. And, at its best, out of chaos comes creativity. I think it’s more about how we respond to the chaos that counts.”
“And how do I...we— How does anyone do that? Respond to the chaos?”
“I guess…learn to ride the wave, chef.”
