They were sitting on the curb by a pitstop, loooking out over a neverending and winding road, as his father filled up the tank of the car with gas. His mother had ruffled his hair and told him that that was a silly question, but he was very smart for his age. She didn’t give him an answer.

“We were at a party, he went to go dance and came back like this,” Yushi explained.
“Riku, what happened while you were dancing?” Riku pushed his head up enough to speak, eyes clenched through the pain.
“It was fine… I was smelling everyone and nothing was weird…” Riku took a long breath, burrowing himself into the nest further, “But I smelt this alpha’s scent, it was the strongest scent there. Pretty quickly afterwards I went into heat.” The nurse paused, humming in response as she pulled out a pad to write a prescription on it.
“I think you’ve found your fated mate, Riku, he’s the only one who can stop this.”
(or, Riku finds his soulmate at a party and loses him in the same day (and himself))

“Why do you look so sad?” Riku points out again, still in a gentle voice, and Yushi’s just getting tired of the conversation.
“Because you don’t need me…” Yushi says honestly.
“I do.” Riku suddenly turns serious.
“You don’t need me here.”
“It’s not that I don’t need you–I do, I’m happy if you’re here.”

"You're so pretty today." Riku compliments. "What's the occasion?" He asks. Curious why he went out with his friends on a random Thursday. Yushi just hums, making him chuckle. "No reason?"
Jokingly, because he's drunk, Yushi says, "Your birthday." Making his boyfriend laugh. "You went out for my birthday? Without me?" Riku says, laughing.
Riku spends the first hour of his birthday with Yushi, in a car.
