Summary
Everyone in the world has a gift from their soulmate: some inborn, characteristic ability passed from one soul to another along an intangible, unbreakable bond. Unbreakable, but not inviolate, at least to those willing to cross the boundary of sanity and ethics to exert control, as Hashirama—and then several others—discover, rather to their horror.
(As far as anyone knows, Tobirama does not have a soulmate. And yet, secrets long buried do have their ways of making their way back to the light, and grave dirt does stain.)

"You flatter yourself if you assumed any differently," Madara sneers, running his thumb over the corner of Tobirama's faint smile. "Your brother is the only one strong enough to rival me in battle."
“That is not the only way to defeat someone," Tobirama replies, taking the thumb into his mouth.
(Where Madara demands Tobirama's hand out of spite, Tobirama ends up elected Hokage, and things somehow work out better than any of them expects.)

Summary
Tobirama feels his chakra curl in irritation, the warmth of his fire recoiling from him, like Tobirama's very presence is repulsive, abhorrent. This is an exercise in repetition, he knows Madara detests him, like most people, but absolutely nothing about it ever gets easier, it only ever gets worse. Something painful drops through his chest, and the feeling is overwhelming, excruciating.
Someday, he thinks. His heart will finally have enough and it will quit, stop beating and grow cold, crushed under the pain. And so he would die, not under the blade of an enemy but the weight of his own loneliness, rejected and excluded.
"I am only trying to be polite, I do not mean to pick a fight. In this time of peace, I do not see any reason for strife." Tobirama replies, tired and curt.
"My version of peace," Madara looks at him indifferently, "has no place for someone like you."
Tobirama watches wordlessly as Madara walks away, even as something inside him breaks.
