From the kitchen comes the familiar sound of a kettle being set down a little too hard, followed by socked footsteps padding down the hallway. Shane appears in the doorway, already dressed, hair still a little damp from the shower. He’s got that look on his face, something too fond and tired and resigned, the exact one he wears when Ilya says something ridiculous, but he’s going to indulge it anyway.
"You’re not dying," Shane groans back. "You have a cold."
Ilya gets sick and makes it Shane's problem.

Ilya does mind. Hearing it said back to him, almost makes him flinch, a sudden and brittle sound right next to his ear that he fails to recoil from in time. But he swallows back the bitter truth and replies, “Of course not. If that is what you want.”
He waits, sitting on his living room couch, phone pressed painfully against his ear, his other hand gripping his knees till his knuckles blanched. He could feel his own heart rattling behind his ribs, pulse rockingloudly. His mind was an echo of alarm, demanding of him: Why isn't Shane saying anything?
It was the loudest silence he’s ever lived through, until Shane finally said, “Okay.”

Alex’s name is announced and he walks out of the tunnel, his beaming face is shown in bright technicolour on the screen. When Gaby sees her father, she can’t hold back her excitement. She pulls on Henry’s hand and points to the screen. “Look, Daddy!” she exclaims, her dark curls bouncing. “It’s Papi! It’s Papi’s turn to swim!”
“You’re right, love,” Henry answers his daughter before turning to his son. “What do you think, Artie? Do you see Papi?” Henry points at the screen. It shows Alex waving at the crowd. Artie giggles and waves back at Alex, his small hand almost catching Henry in the nose.

As he gets to the second floor, he can hear the soft murmur of Henry’s voice; though he’s unable to make out the individual words, there’s a rhythm that he recognizes. Henry is telling their daughter a bedtime story. Alex follows the sound down the shadowy hallway, his steps silent as he makes his way to their daughter’s room.
The door is slightly ajar, and Henry’s voice becomes clearer as Alex gets closer. “...sent the wild things off to bed without their supper. And Max the king of all wild things was lonely and wanted to be where someone loved him best of all.”
Alex pushes the door open slowly and meets Henry’s blue-eyed gaze and warm smile. Henry pauses in his reading, putting a finger to his lips, and Alex looks over to see their daughter tucked tightly under her blankets, her eyes slowly drooping and her dark eyelashes fluttering against her cheeks.
OR Henry is putting his daughter to sleep with a bedtime story and Alex falls asleep too.
