Summary
When Katherine Freeling moves her children to the Undervale, a weather-worn house perched above the sea, she tells herself it’s a fresh start. Her brother’s death left her the crumbling hotel and all its debts, but also a chance to begin again. The fog is thick, the town is wary, and the house is never quite silent.
Strange things start small: footsteps in empty rooms, food that disappears, the faint scent of candle smoke when no one has lit a match. Then come the voices, the shifting light, and the feeling that the Undervale remembers them.
It is a story about family, grief, and the kind of ghosts that linger in houses and in people long after the doors have been locked.
In other words, the pilot we never saw.

It hits her with packing tape stuck to her fingers.
It’s all tangled up and sticking to itself, Abaddon’s loose hand in hers while he sits on the bathroom counter two feet away. The stump at his wrist doesn’t seem to bother him, but Katherine can’t look at it without feeling queasy.
She’d attached his arm back to his shoulder just last weekend.
Even peeling the masking tape from Esther’s botch job off his shoulder hadn’t turned her stomach the way this does, because yes, looking down at his hand in hers is-
God, his hand is so small.
Katherine understands completely why her bleeding heart brother had pulled him out of that hole.
She even almost understands why Nathan had kept him.

"Oh... God." Ben swallowed. He was barely fourteen - he knew this was way above his paygrade, but Abaddon looked so... small. And confused and helpless, standing hunched in the corner. Something in Ben's heart twisted, like a knife plunged deep inside of him, too deep to ever retrieve.
"Abaddon, I'm not going to kill myself!"
Abaddon blinked and looked up at him, his eyes sunken and wide at the same time. "You aren't?"

After a series of unfortunate events leaves Abaddon mercilessly bound to a human vessel and barred from returning home, he resolves to wait at the site of his greatest failure for Hell to come and retrieve him, even if that means waiting for the rest of eternity. And he sticks to that resolve, he really does. Until one day a man welcomes him into his hotel, and Abaddon learns that his longing for home does not have to stop him from finding a new one.
