Summary
Hannibal consumes. That is who Hannibal is, at his core. A carnivore. A predator. An insatiable, hungry thing.
Hannibal consumes Will’s thoughts. Will’s heart. Will’s flesh and blood, when Will is feeling generous (and Will never realized, before Hannibal, just how generous he could be). Hannibal consumes the sheep and pigs that surround them. Consumes the praise for his mind and the accolades for his art. Consumes the fear that fills his prey at the end of a long hunt.
It makes sense, then, that Hannibal’s consumption would lead them to this point.

When Will leaves the BSHCI, he is not broken, because there is nothing left to fix. There is nothing left at all, actually. Just the shell of a man who fell in love with the devil and learned the true meaning of hell. Will decides to leave Baltimore and all of its accompanying horrors behind, taking only his dogs with him.
Hannibal has something to say about Will's decision. More than one thing, actually. But without Will there to hear, Hannibal begins to realize just how big of a mistake he has truly made.

Summary
Dying with Hannibal Lecter would be much easier than living with him turned out to be. Will had known it would be. It was part of the calculated risk he had decided was an acceptable price for taking an obligate predator like Hannibal out for good. At the time Will had judged the risk of himself surviving as negligible.
