“Alright?” Sam asked in that quiet voice that was neither his true accent nor Lestat’s French timber, like a coin caught on its side, unsure where to fall.
Jacob only nodded, still blinking tears from his eyes. His coin had fallen quite resolutely on the side of Louis. He knew not to speak, for only an American accent would fall from his tongue and give him away.
Sam, of course, knew anyway. He slid his hands up Jacob’s back and neck to gently cup his face, slipping his thumbs across damp cheeks to catch the excess moisture still leaking from his eyes. Jacob could do nothing except grip his wrists, holding his steady warm palms to his skin, and tipping his head forward a few inches until his forehead came to rest against Sam’s.

“Yeah,” Louis replies, finding himself smiling again. “I know you do.”
