"They, uh, did a good job on you. Your chest looks good," says Martin, in what he can only hope is a casual tone.

"Thanks. Yours too," Jon replies automatically. A beat passes, and then Jon's eyes go wide with horror while Martin stands and splutters with some unnameable emotion. "Oh, good lord, I didn't mean-"

"No, no, no, it's okay," says Martin, once he's peeled his eyebrows back off the ceiling. "You're good. I, I actually appreciate it?"

    Summary

Jon yawns from his spot on the couch, stretches his arms over his head, and then falls into Martin’s lap.

“God, I’m exhausted. I don’t think I’ll make it into bed tonight; I barely have the energy to braid my hair.”

I could braid it for you . It’s the sort of thought that used to flash across Martin’s mind occasionally only to be immediately quashed, back when he was still pining after Jon with a fondness he never hoped would be reciprocated. Now, though, there’s nothing stopping him from making the offer out loud, so he does.

“Oh.” Jon blinks up at him. “Could you?”

Martin braids Jon's hair. That's it, that's the fic.

Martin hadn't heard from Jon in a week. That wasn't such a strange thing; Even though Jon was no longer on the run and had technically been back at work for over a month, he had barely been in contact with any of the Archives staff. Going one week without hearing from Jon wouldn't be anything at all to worry about, if it weren't for one thing:

    They had a date.

AU where the Archives staff notice Jon is missing and rescue him from the Circus.

    Summary

It shouldn’t have been surprising to learn that Martin hated him. He had been, he knew, a truly terrible boss - he’d treated Martin horribly, caused him to lose his home, nearly gotten him killed. Really, it had been ridiculous to ever think that Martin wouldn’t hate him.

Still, Jon had been trying, in his own way, to make it up to him. There wasn’t exactly a card at the drugstore that said, “I’m sorry I berated you for six months and caused you to nearly be eaten by a swarm of worms of potentially supernatural origin,” but he’d been trying. He brought Martin breakfast every morning, made sure the breakroom cabinets were stocked with his favorite blends of tea, and had tried to work some genuine praise into his feedback of Martin’s work. None of it was the direct apology that his conscience told him he really ought to give, but Martin had appreciated it. Or seemed to, anyway.

Jon wasn’t certain what motivated the decision he made next - whether it was guilt or spite or something else. He could, he knew, be quite petty when the situation called for it. Either way, he made up his mind then and there to prove Martin wrong. He was going to be the best fake boyfriend he could be.

    Summary

Martin can’t remember the last time he’s seen a sunrise. Even before the world ended, even when he still regularly saw the sun, it wasn’t as though he went out of his way to watch it. At the cabin, he and Jon had floated the idea of waking up early some day to watch the sun come up – sunrise must have been spectacular in the highlands – but they’d never gotten around to it. They thought they had time.

Martin’s glad they’ve made time now.

Jon sets down his tea and watches the dawn. The weak morning light halos his face and makes the grey streaks in his hair shine like well-polished steel.

    “Beautiful…” he sighs.

The birds are beginning to stir, and Martin hadn’t realized how much he missed the sound of birds until he hears them chirping. For just a moment, the world feels normal again.

They’ll have to leave this behind soon. In a matter of days, probably, they’ll have to go back out into the world where day and night and sun and stars are all replaced by the cold, unending stare of the Eye.

“You could stay here, you know,” Jon says out of nowhere.
