He wants Ilya to know that. That that’s what had struck him more than Shane being gay, maybe even more than Shane being in love with Ilya—the fact that it had taken eight years for them to get where they are. Shane, who had systems for everything from loading the dishwasher to organizing his closet. Somehow, he let Ilya exist beside him for eight years without a label to whatever was growing between them. That feels monumental. That feels like all David needs to know.

“I told you. Hollander and I, we are in love. He is my hockey player.” Ilya wiggled his eyebrows at the joke, but couldn’t keep himself from watching Scott Hunter.
“Sure, Roz. You and Hollander are in love, want to get married, spend the rest of your lives playing hockey together.” When Ilya didn’t immediately reply to that very accurate statement, Hunter continued: “If you two are in love, I’m straight. That’s how likely that is.” He had laughed and skated away, though Ilya really hadn’t understood what was supposed to be funny about that.
Standing alone on the ice, the crowd slowly filing out of the rink, Ilya was faced with a startling realization: telling people may be harder than he thought.

Like Hunter, Hayes laughed. “That a boy, Rozy. Dream big.”
Ilya ran over the words twice in his mind before he made himself ask, “Dream?”
“Sure. I get it. Hollander’s a babe. Perfect crush material.” This earned a few more cheers in agreement from their teammates.
“Crush? I don’t have crush. Russians do not do this.” Ilya could feel the same struggle unfolding before him.
Wyatt reached over and laid a hand on Ilya’s shoulder. “Don’t worry about it, Rozy. We’ve all been there.”
“No.” Ilya said as multiple of his beloved teammates nodded in agreement. “Shane is mine.”
Instead of shock and thousands of questions, there was laughter. Wyatt squeezed his shoulder. “Manifest it.”
