“So these flames burn away people’s memories?” Kaeya questioned, tea cup clinking onto the saucer as he met the gaze of the Traveler, invested.
The Traveler smiled somberly, “Yeah. After they awoke, their memories were burned away, effectively ‘killing’ the past version of them that belonged to the House, and setting them free with a new identity.” Placing their cheek into their palm, they sighed as they leaned on the table, “I know it’s a good thing they didn’t actually get killed, and I know they were a lot happier afterward, but I can’t help but feel sad for all those memories they lost.” A pause to take a sip of the lemon tea, “Cause… There were probably some really sweet memories they lost forever. Lost to time. It’s kind of unsettling, y’know?”
Kaeya lifted the cup and stared blankly into it, “I wouldn’t say that,” his cold fingers rubbed the delicate glass handle, “Those lovely memories only end up hurting you when you realize there’s no going back to them.”
“Huh. I’d never thought about it like that. I guess I can understand what you mean.”

If things went downhill, if he was loathed, an unwilling threat, if his petty emotions got too much to handle, he always had another option. He was never helpless this way. How could he be? There was no excuse for him to be helpless or pitiful or otherwise. He was always scheming, manipulative, and selfish. That was his truth, determined by everyone else because he wouldn’t, couldn’t, shouldn’t, utter anything but lies. Putting his deceitful silver tongue to true rest would be great. Yes, putting himself to rest would be divine.

He laughed bitterly, looking at the warmly lit Dawn Winery. His shoulders trembled and he sneezed as a snowflake fell onto his nose.
The first snow of the year.
It was so cold outside, and the winery looked so warm. It’s not like he couldn’t go in there, right? He was still allowed after all…

Basically, Kaeya ends up dying on his birthday, but he comes back seven years later. Although nobody really understands why this is the case, they’re all grateful.
(I decided to somewhat rewrite two of my old fics from 2021; “Happy Birthday Kaeya” and “Temporarily dead”, but this time I made it one fic and I tried to make the characters behave more realistically) :)
