Zagreus should have expected this to happen. He and Thanatos have been hurtling towards this point for a long time. Thanatos approaches Zagreus, wanting to turn their relationship into something more, but Zagreus refuses to let his impulses cost him the dear friend he just got back. Even if he loves him.

"OK but like I mean it, the loser has to do anything the winner asks. Like anything. Pinky promise." Zag said leaning closer with one pinky stretched towards Than.
Than stayed leaned back in his chair, arms still crossed. “Yes, that’s typically the rule we always play by. Why would it change now?” He slowly leaned forward, hooking his pinky around Zag’s.
“Great. Perfect. So here’s the challenge: I ask you one of your study questions, and if you get it right, you win. But if you don’t—” Zagreus leaned back in his chair, both arms raised so his hands were resting behind his head.
“You win. I get it,” Thanatos cut him off

While on his usual excursion in Elysium, Zagreus comes across Thanatos who just so happened to be in the neighborhood (extremely loud incorrect buzzer, he was waiting for Zag to show up). Still rekindling their relationship, things reach a turning point after a particularly ferocious battle.
