I am Superman. Ask me anything!

Summary:

My friend and colleague Mister Terrific advised me to go public. Answer questions from the average citizen in a way I haven't been able to do before. These are turbulent times and I hope I can ease some troubled minds simply by being there in any way I -- we -- can.

or: once everything calms down, Superman participates in r/AMA

Notes:

This work contains spoilers for Superman!

I own nothing, this is a tribute to this wonderful movie and my enthusiastic commenters who asked for more Superman Reddit!

Advice by the Author: Please take 3 minutes to read "My (M35) rival (M?) just destroyed my office", as well as "What's up with the sudden Superman hate?" so this makes a bit more sense. No requirement, but advised :)

Please excuse the horrid HTML formatting

I am Superman. Ask me anything!

Hello Metropolis (and the World)!

I realize it's been quite a few turbulent days recently.

First I stopped Boravia from invading Jarhanpur. Then I was attacked by a metahuman known as "The Hammer of Boravia". After that a video of my parents got leaked -- a video which I previously hadn't known in it's entire version. Then I surrendered myself to the military. I got sent to a pocket universe, broke out with the help of a few of my friends, recovered from poisoning, fought Luthor to stop him from ending the world via black hole and now we're here.

I highly recommend checking out this article by the wonderful Lois Lane, in case you want a more sophisticated catch-up than my one paragraph summary. She and her team from the Daily Planet are also the ones who uncovered Luthor's plans and exposed them, so I must thank them for that!

Still, the past couple of days have been hectic and nerve-wracking for many: the citizens of Metropolis who had to deal with an emergency evacuation and are still cleaning up the damage. The brave people of Jarhanpur who stood against an unjust regime and lost their friends and family in the assault. And everyone who was watching those events from the safety of their homes, wanting to help, but not being able to. I've learned these past couple days just how horrible helplessness can feel.

My friend and colleague Mister Terrific advised me to go public. Answer questions from the average citizen in a way I haven't been able to do before. These are turbulent times and I hope I can ease some troubled minds simply by being there in any way I -- we -- can.

This account has been verified by the mod team and we'll keep the Q&A running for five hours, during which I'll do my best to answer any and all questions you've got.

Thank you very much for your trust and support!

Superman

i've never seen you lose a fight before watching your fight against the Hammer of Boravia. seeing you get thrown out of the air with red in your face was absolutely terrifying for me and I can't imagine what it must've been like for you. so my question for you would be: was this the first fight you've ever lost? i had researched a bit but couldn't find any other losses of yours.

thank you for taking the time to indulge us. you're a hero to me and many others around the world and I'm so thankful for everything you do!

Thank you for your interest and concern, shining_communication_9628!

Unless you could baseball games as a kid, that fight against the Hammer of Boravia was indeed the first time that I lost a fight. However, my personal safety isn't as important as the fact that I managed to protect most of Metropolis's citizens from the attack. If I've saved even a single person, I haven't lost, because in the end, that's why I do what I do.

Thank you again for your question!

Who or what made you decide to become a superhero?

OP • u/official_superman • 3 h

Excellent question, thebuttsmatch_228, thank you!

If you'd asked me a week prior I'd have said my biological parents. By now, most of you have probably seen the video of my parents and what they'd wish for me to do. I had only ever had access to the first half -- telling me to love and protect humanity. So that's what I did. It was my parent's last wish after all.

However, since the full, uncorrupted, footage got revealed by Lex Luthor, I've had to reconsider not only my loyalty to my biological parents, but also who I want to be. And I want to be human. I want to love. I want to live. There were people here on Earth who raised me and they taught me to value life and humanity. It's in their honor that I decide to fight for what's right. And in the end, isn't it a deeply human instinct to look at other people and want to cherish and protect them, because they as living beings are worth being loved?

I'd go so far as to say that this humanity is my greatest strength. Without humanity, all the strength in the world is useless. I love getting to experience that humanity and helping protect others so they can enjoy their humanity a little longer. And at that point it wasn't really a conscious decision anymore, it was simply something I could do. And our choices and our actions make us who we are, ultimately, not where we come from.

I apologize, this went off on a tangent, but I still hope I managed to answer your question somewhat satisfactory.

"without humanity, all the strength in the world is useless". wow, how the fuck is that so inspiring??

A bit of a silly question, but what's your favorite song?

OP • u/official_superman • 6 h

Not silly at all, thanks for asking! I have to admit it changes all the time. Generally, I'm a huge fan of the Mighty Crabjoys, but currently I've got "Punkrockers" by Teddybears stuck in my head -- super catchy song!

u/soupisbetterthancheese • 6 h

omg, you like the Mighty Crabjoys as well? this is the best day of my life stg!

If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

OP • u/official_superman • 6 h

Oh wow, that's a surprisingly difficult question, thank you for asking!

If I had to choose, probably handmade apple pie where the secret ingredient is love. That just tastes like home!

Do you hate Luthor for what he's done?

OP • u/official_superman • 3 h

Hate is a strong word. Do I hate him? No, no I do not. But he has caused people all over the world unimaginable pain and suffering. I watched him kill a man, simply because the man had been kind to me in the past. So whilst I do not hate Luthor, I am saddened by his choices. All living beings have the opportunity to be wonderful and kind, and I am disappointed to see that he's let his past experiences influence him to the point of harming others. Having his own (valid) struggles is a reason for why he did what he did, but it will never justify his actions.

u/shining_communication_9628 • 3 h

Ohhhhhh boy, that's gotta smart. I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed. I can see the disappointed Dad look on his face already

u/thebuttsmatch_228 • 3 h

He's obviously not defending Luthor right now, he just doesn't hate him, because Superman doesn't hate, apparently

What's the coolest location you've ever been to?

OP • u/official_superman • 6 h

Excellent question, quadruple_somersault_7528, thank you!

There are so many beautiful places in Earth, it would be hard to settle for one. Sunsets over the arctic ice is a bit of a nostalgic favorite. But one view I can never get enough of is looking down on the Earth from space. There's a quiet beauty in it, as well as a fragility. The Earth seems so mighty when on the ground, but from above you realize that this is our home and it deserves protection and love.
