Work Text:
“Hey Tommy, look! I’m doing magic!” A boy with brown hair and blue eyes held up a flower with a honeybee on it.
“Don’t be stupid, Tubbo. That’s just a bee. Besides, magic isn’t even real.” Tommy playfully rolled his eyes, walking through the tall, grassy field towards his best friend.
Of course, he was lying about that. Magic was very much real. He should know, growing up with it and all. But Tubbo was a muggle and couldn’t know the truth. His parents told him that was just the way of their worlds, and had to keep it a secret. He was lucky enough to finally get to see another kid his age, after the Underscores moved into their neighborhood a few years back.
Unfortunately, he would have to eventually say goodbye when he left for Hogwarts in a couple years. Tommy would end up spending most of the year there anyways, and sending crows to his family would definitely raise suspicions, especially for someone as observant as Tubbo. So, he had to enjoy his time with his best friend while he still could.
“No, you don't get it. I was actually doing it. The flower bloomed in my hand. It was beautiful.” Tubbo explained, his eyes sparkling as the bee landed on his nose before flying away.
“Whatever you say, Big T.” He laughed, sitting down right next to him.
The two flopped down on the grass, looking up at the cloudy, blue sky. They passed time by chatting, talking about everything and anything, mostly stupid stuff, for countless hours. It was the moments like these Tommy cherished the most. He just wished they would’ve lasted longer. Before they knew it, the world around them turned to dusk, meaning they would have to head home soon. Luckily, they could always meet again tomorrow.
“Wait, before we go, I have something I want to give you.” Tubbo unzipped his backpack, reaching in to hand him a present.
“What the hell is this for? My birthday was months ago, and we still have some time before Christmas.” Tommy confusingly examined the thin, square, wrapped gift.
“Come on, bossman. Don’t you want to open it?” He insisted, giving an eager grin.
Tommy ripped apart the yellow and black wrapping paper to reveal a vinyl disc labeled Cat, “Pog! It’s the last one I needed in my C148 collection. You didn’t have to get this for me, big man.” He glanced up at his friend with a soft smile.
“Hey, it’s no big deal. I know you’ve been looking for that music disc for months now. I wanted to give you at least something before I moved back to London.” Tubbo’s smile faded as he looked down.
“What the hell?! You’re not staying here in Brighton?” The blond jumped to his feet.
Tubbo quietly shook his head, heaving a disappointed sigh, “No, my family is moving back this fall. I found out earlier today, but I didn’t want to tell you earlier because it would’ve ruined the mood. I wanted our last moments together to at least be fun.”
“Can you not convince your parents to stay? I’m sure you can do something about it!” Tommy desperately protested, his eyes slightly tearing up at the thought of losing him.
“Trust me, I really tried to, but they made up their minds. Do you really think I wanted this? It’s hard enough having to move around and change schools all the time. Now I’m going to have to leave my only friend behind too…” Tubbo frowned, standing up while avoiding eye contact.
Noticing his friend’s sorrow, Tommy pushed his feelings aside to comfort him. “Hey, it’s okay. I know this sucks, I really fucking does, but it’s not like either of us are going forever.” He pulled him in for a hug.
“Yeah, I guess you’re right about that, but who knows when that will be, if ever. Just promise not to forget me, okay?” Tubbo sniffled, gripping onto his white and red-sleeved shirt.
“I promise I won’t. You will always be my first and best friend, Tubbo. Just promise me you won’t replace me with a new best friend, not until I see you again.” He reassured him, slightly narrowing his gaze at the end.
“Okay, I won’t replace you with anyone, but how are you so sure that we will see each other again? For all you know I could move to the United States or be dead before that happens.” The brunet pointed out.
“A gut feeling you may call it, or maybe magic.” He laughed, “I know one day we will see each other again, we just have to wait for that day to happen.”
And Tommy did wait, several years in fact. Now that he was heading off to Hogwarts, their reunion seemed impossible, yet Tommy still held out hope. Just like he believed in magic, he knew they would meet again.
The Minecraft family finished shopping at Midnight Alley. While Phil stopped by Griangots’ bank, Tommy basically dragged the others around the entire Midnight Alley, eager to explore every single shop. Technoblade ended up buying a couple quills, his favorite one being a black feather that resembled a crow’s. Meanwhile, Wilbur bought some stuff related to potions, sharing a passion for the subject like his father.
Tommy tried convincing them to purchase a broom with no luck. His family insisted he could just borrow one of his siblings and was too young to be flying yet. At the Magical Menagerie, Tommy eyed up a barn owl, which he wanted to keep and call Clementine. But alas, they insisted there was no need for him to have an owl with Phil’s crows.
He was disappointed to say the least, but wouldn’t let that hinder his excitement. Once everyone was finished with their shopping and errands, they left Midnight Alley and headed for the G-train station. Inside it was bustling with people, some of which Tommy identified as Hogwarts students. Before they could continue on to Platform 9 ¾, they noticed Phil enamored by a copper statue of a young man with a parrot on his shoulder.
“Why is dad fascinated with that statue so much? It’s just of some famous guy who died hundreds of years ago.” Wilbur unamusingly rolled his eyes.
“That isn’t just any random guy, Wilbur. He is the wizard who built this train station and Midnight Alley.” Technoblade nudged his twin.
“I’m still not sure why dad cares so much though.” He crossed his arms.
“You wouldn’t understand,” Technoblade replied, approaching Phil and the statue.
He placed a hand on his shoulder and gave a supportive nod. Kristin joined him, doing the same on his other side with a soft expression. Phil glanced over his shoulder at both of them, giving a wistful smile before heading on their way.
“I still don’t get it. He’s just some architect, so what? It’s not like dad knew him personally.” Wilbur remarked.
“Honestly, I am just as confused as you are, Wil,” Tommy shrugged in response, “I could honestly care less about some stupid statue, I want to get on the train and go to school already.”
“Alright then,” Phil nodded, leading the way as he and Kristin held hands.
“Tommy bein’ excited to go to school? Who is this and where did you hide our brother?” Technoblade laughed, “Careful Wilbur, he might be a dementor pretending to be Tommy. I might have to use my patronus on him.” Technoblade took out his wand, standing between his brothers.
“We are only in our fourth year, Techno. We don’t even know how to use that charm yet.” Wilbur scoffed, having him put it away before any muggles could notice.
“Actually I do. Have you ever considered gettin’ good?” He smirked.
“Not everyone can be a star student like you and the headmaster’s son.” Wilbur rolled his eyes.
“Wait, the headmaster has a son that’s in your year? Why doesn’t anyone fucking tell me these things?” Tommy intervened.
“Trust me, it’s honestly better that way. He’s a massive prick that has only given me and Techno trouble in the past. He is one of those types of purebloods to put it, obsessed with status and thinking they’re above everyone else.” Wilbur explained with a distasteful expression.
“Wilbur’s bein’ slightly dramatic, but yeah. He once challenged me to a duel one time after I called him a teletubby. In my defense, it was funny, and I beat him anyway.” Technoblade added on, looking very proud of the fact.
“Pog! Way to kick his ass and show him who’s boss.” Tommy cheered.
“Everyone talked about that duel for weeks. I still don’t get why he’s so uptight about it to this day, despite the fact that it was years ago. Now he has some sort of weird vendetta against our family. So, if you see him, stay far away.”
“You know I can’t guarantee anything. Besides, I think it would be funnier to prank him, and show him to not mess with our family. I was thinking maybe something with spiders.” Tommy formed a devilish expression.
“Out of everything you could’ve chosen from hexes, jinxes, potions or curses, why would you choose spiders?” Wilbur shook his head in disappointment.
“I think spiders are fucking cool, way cooler than anteaters. They are just stupid.” He defensively crossed his arms.
“Nobody is pranking anyone, especially not on Tommy’s first day.” Phil turned around, giving them a sternful glare.
“Alright, we can do it on his second then.” Technoblade smugly replied.
“The school year hasn’t even officially started yet, and my sons are already starting to plot things. Kristin, what am I going to do with them?” Phil heaved a sigh as his wife couldn’t help but laugh.
When they arrived at Platform 9 ¾, Tommy insisted on being the first one to enter. After all, he did it before when sending Phil, Technoblade and Wilbur off years prior. Now, it was going to be his turn. Tommy strapped his luggage to a cart, and looked at the brick wall with a determined expression. With all his strength, he accelerated himself, only to crash with a loud bang as passerby muggles glanced over in concern.
“Shit,” He cursed to himself, getting to his feet as he collected his belongings.
“Tommy dear, that’s the wrong platform.” Kristin giggled, kneeling down to help out her son.
“If he keeps running into walls like that he’s going to get brain damage, or even worse get stitches.” Wilbur said in a mix of sarcasm and concern.
“Tommy, it’s platform nine and three quarters, not nine. You were off by three fourths. Don’t tell me you can’t count fractions.” Technoblade shook his head.
“Maybe maths just isn’t Tommy’s strong suit, but that’s perfectly fine. He’s just better at different things,” Phil supportivley placed a hand on his shoulder, as his son smiled in return, “I know you’re excited, but would you rather us go first instead?” He asked as Tommy stood up.
“No, I want to try again. I think I got it this time.” The blond told them, strapping his luggage to the cart once more.
Tommy faced the wall, this time the correct one. Taking a deep breath, he took a few steps back before charging once more. Just as he was about to ram into the brick wall, Tommy closed his eyes, prepared if it went wrong again. A chilling wind surrounded him with a loud whooshing sound, opening his eyes to see the Hogwarts express parked on the other side. Soon after, the rest of his family followed close behind.
“I knew you could do it! I’m so proud of you!” Kristin hugged him as Tommy couldn’t help but smile in return.
“Of course he could do it. He’s a Minecraft after all.” Phil told her, giving his son a nod of approval.
“Now he’s only goin’ to have to do it six more times without bangin’ his head hopefully.” Technoblade laughed as he warped into the platform.
“Not counting any breaks we might have like Christmas.” Wilbur was the last to enter, soon gathering around Tommy like the rest of the family.
“I think he should worry about just this first semester for now, and adjusting to his new life. It can be a lot to get used to, and you two should know what it was like during your first year.” Kristin told her sons.
“Yeah, but this is Tommy we’re talkin’ about. I’m sure by his first week he will do somethin’ to bring attention to the whole school. I’m willin’ to bet on that.” Technoblade remarked.
“Yeah, Techno has a point you know,” Wilbur nodded in agreement, “If I had to guess I think–” He trailed off, peeking over his family to wave at someone, his cheeks turning red.
Tommy looked over his shoulder, noticing a girl with fiery red hair in a braid. She wore blue on her robe, the same as Technoblade’s. He could already make some assumptions about what was going on between them. Though, he was wondering why Wilbur didn’t tell him anything about her, and if their parents already knew.
“–Actually, I think Techno and I should claim a booth. Seats get taken up quickly, you know,” He said, his twin nudging him in response with a smirk, “I'll see you later, Tommy. Here’s to me hoping you will be in the same house.” The twins bid their parents farewell before meeting up with the red-haired girl, and stepping onto the train.
“Fuck you, Wilbur! I’m not a Slytherin!” Tommy shouted, but they couldn’t hear him.
“Well then, I suppose it’s time we get going too. Like your brothers said, the carts fill up quickly. You don’t want the last pick now, do you?” Phil suggested, picking up his luggage.
“I guess you’re right,” Tommy smiled, glancing over at the train. “Bye mum, I hope you won’t be too lonely without your favorite son around.”
“I wouldn’t go that far. Kristin and I don’t have any favorites.” Phil shook his head.
“Dad, it’s obvious that Techno has always been yours. It’s only fair that I am hers then. As for Wilbur, I don’t fucking know. He can be his secret girlfriend’s favorite.” He shrugged upon letting go of her.
“How about tonight, I’ll let you be my favorite as a celebration for tonight. Promise you will write to me often and tell me all about your adventures, especially about the new friends you make and trouble you get into.” She whispered, to which he happily nodded in return.
“Best of luck to you, Tommy. I’ll be there to watch you and see you after the ceremony,” Phil ruffled his son’s hair before approaching his wife, “Goodbye Kristin, I’m going to miss you” He leaned over to give her a kiss.
“You know we’ll never be apart, darling. Even if I’m not physically there, I’ll always be here with you and our boys. If you ever need me, you know exactly where I’ll be.” She softly smiled as she gazed into her husband’s eyes.
Once finished, Tommy and Phil walked up the stairs to their train, carrying their luggage. Tommy set his belongings down, rushing over to Kristin to give her one last hug before fully entering. The final horn went off, and minutes later the engine started to power. When the wheels started to turn, they waved to Kristin, who remained on the platform, her hair swaying with the steam, soon out of sight as they fully left the station.
Once the train was running on its tracks, Phil and Tommy parted ways. His father went to a booth with who assumed were other teachers. Meanwhile, Tommy was at a loss of where he should sit. Browsing his options, he walked down the aisle, first noticing his two brothers already seated.
Wilbur sang as he played his guitar. The red-haired girl he saw earlier leaned on his shoulder and peacefully closed her eyes. Technoblade sat between two other Ravenclaws: a boy with brown curly hair and sunglasses and a girl with short brown hair and two blonde streaks at the front. The only other student not in their house besides Wilbur, was a boy wearing 3D glasses who wore a red tie.
Tommy had already decided sitting with them wasn’t an option. How embarrassing would it be for him to mooch off his older siblings. Heading to the next cart, he noticed four Slytherins sitting together. There was a boy with dark hair and ram horns, a boy with blond hair and blue eyes who wore gold jewelry. Across from them was another boy with black hair and a beanie, and a girl with long, purple hair and a devilish smirk.
He knew right away that joining them was a big no. If one thing is for sure, Tommy was not a Slytherin. Still, they looked to be around Wilbur’s age and Tommy couldn’t help but wonder if they were his house friends.
Moving on, he noticed three girls in one booth. One was a Gryffindor, with long brown hair and a rabbit hat. The other two were first years like him, judging by their black ties. The first girl had green eyes, her hair split between blond and black. The other girl had short, white hair and orange and brown highlights, wearing calico cat ears.
He thought it would be weird for him to be the only guy sitting next to a bunch of girls. Arriving at the next cart, there were four boys, one of them was a Ravenclaw with reddish-brown hair, another a Gryffindor with orange hair and fox ears. Then, there were two more first years, one with sandy blond hair and violet eyes, and another with dark skin, red eyes, who wore a bandana.
Though, for some reasons, it didn’t feel like a match to him. So, Tommy kept venturing forward until he found a booth with only one person in it. Alone sat a first year boy with brown hair, blue eyes and a snowy owl on his shoulder. For just a moment, he stared in awe, his feet carrying himself to the glass door as he knocked without realizing it.
“Umm… Hey, do you mind if I sit here with you?”Tommy shook his head, snapping out of his trance.
Turning his way, the brunet boy raised his eyebrows upon seeing him, “–No, not at all! Currently, it’s just me in here, so I don’t mind the company.” Tommy nodded, setting his luggage on the rack above and taking a seat across from him, while the boy examined him thoroughly, “Tommy?” He froze.
Tommy profusely blinked, staring wide eyed before it suddenly clicked, “Tubbo?” He nodded in response with a giddy smile, causing Tommy to rush over to him and pull him for a tight hug, “Oh my god! It’s so good to see you again! I didn’t expect to run into you here of all places.”
“Me neither! I thought I might never see you again.” Tubbo closed his eyes, resting his chin on his shoulder.
He didn’t want to let go, afraid he might lose him again, but eventually had to, “Wait, what are you doing here? I thought you were a muggle.” He asked, narrowing his gaze.
His friend let out an amused laugh, “I should ask you the same question. Please don’t tell me they indoctrinated you too.” Tubbo awkwardly glanced aside.
“Indoctrinated? What the fuck are you talking about? I’ve been a wizard my whole life.” Tommy said with slight concern.
“Well, I just found out a few weeks ago actually. So, you’re telling me you knew magic was real this whole time, but when I said it, you just called me stupid.” He pointed out, slightly pouting.
“Yeah, I totally knew this whole time.” He smirked smugly.
“God dammit, Tommy…” Tubbo sighed disappointedly.
“Hey, it’s not my fault I couldn’t tell you. That’s just how things in wizarding society work. Besides, you wouldn’t have believed me anyways, even if I told you.” Tommy stated.
“Of course I would’ve believed you! You are my best friend and I promised I would’ve kept it a secret. All this talk about wizarding society is starting to make me think I actually joined a cult.” The brunet worryingly remarked.
“Hogwarts isn’t a fucking cult!” He shouted, “I’m starting to think you just had a really bad first impression while getting accepted.”
“I guess you could say that. Basically, some guy called Captain Sparklez showed up at my house, claiming to be the deputy headmaster to some place called Pigfarts and that I’m a “muggle-born” wizard. My parents thought he was some kind of telemarketer scammer, and threatened to call the police when he unlocked our door. Meanwhile, my sisters thought he was going to kidnap me.” Tubbo explained with a laugh, “Fortunately, he was able to clear everything up and explain everything. He showed us around Midnight Alley, so we will know what to do next year. I even got this cool owl out of it, his name is Benson.”
The snowy owl on Tubbo’s shoulder flapped his wings as Tommy rolled his eyes, “Lucky, my parents wouldn’t let me get a pet.”
“That’s a shame, but maybe we can find you a pet when we get there. I was given a book on magical creatures, so I bet we can find one for you! Oh, how about a dragon! That would be perfect for you, then we can ride it to class everyday.” Tubbo’s eyes lit up.
“That would be pog and all, but I don’t think you realize how rare they actually are. Actually, while I’m at it, I should explain to you how things work in the wizarding world.” A grin formed across his face.
“Okay, I’m ready to listen!” Tubbo straightened his posture, staring attentively.
Before Tommy could open his mouth, the glass door to the booth swung open, “Hello, would either of you like any candy from the trolley?” A woman with short-blue hair that covered her right eye and wore a black apron, politely waved.
“Wait a minute, do I know you?” Tommy focused his gaze, realizing she looked identical to the lady who ran the wand shop.
The woman let out an awkward chuckle, glancing aside, “I have no idea what you’re talking about. This is the first time we’ve met. Now, do you want anything from the cart or not?”
“Yeah sure, give us a chocolate frog, one fizzing whizzbees, and two jelly slugs.” He tossed her a few galleons to which she nodded, handing him what he wanted before heading on her way.
Tommy quickly opened up the candy, splitting half of it with Tubbo, “Wizarding sweets are the best. I can’t wait til we are able to go to Hogsmeade and buy all the stuff we want.” He explained, while biting the head to his jelly slug.
“Oh look, these ones are shaped like bees!” Tubbo took a caramel-colored candy out of the box before popping it in his mouth. As he chewed, he started to levitate a few inches from his seat before falling back down upon swallowing. “Woah…”
“Those are Fizzing Whizzbees. I got them for you since I thought you might like them.” Tommy smiled.
“I’ve never done anything like that! I want to try it again!” He exclaimed before chewing on another, repeating the process.
“Hey, that’s not all we’ve got. We still have to open up our chocolate frog. Would you like to do the honors?” He asked, handing the blue pentagram shaped box to his friend.
“Sure, I’d love to! I wonder what this one does,” Tubbo excitedly opened the box as the chocolate frog came to life. It hopped off of his lap, climb to the open window before jumping out, “Did the frog just fucking die?” He stuck his head out the window, still in shock.
“I guess so? It’s pretty normal for them to run away like that,” Tommy shrugged, “Wait, you have to show me who you got on the card.”
“What card?” Tubbo tilted his head before seeing it left behind in the box, “–Sir Billiam the Third. I have no idea who the heck that is.” He curiously looked at the pop out image, tilting it around before handing it to Tommy.
It was of a man with short, brown hair with a single streak of pink, who wore glasses. He wore a regal black outfit with accents of gold. In his hands was a potted plant that resembled a venus fly trap, just larger and more malicious looking.
“Oh, he was a past headmaster at Hogwarts hundreds of years ago. My dad sometimes talks about him. Apparently he did a lot of research in Herbology, which was revolutionary for the time.” He casually explained.
“He looks a lot like Technoblade, don’t you think? They both got glasses and even the same hair, pink streak and all.” Tubbo pointed out.
“Huh, I never realized that…” He muttered, “Maybe Techno should dress up as him for Halloween or something. Wait, I never told you what they do for Halloween in Hogwarts! It’s so fucking sick, man! Basically…”
Tommy started to ramble about Hogwarts and Wizarding culture to his friend. The entire time, Tubbo smusingly listened with a smile, of course asking many questions of his own, to which Tommy eagerly answered. This was all so interesting to him, and he was excited to finally experience it himself. This chatter ended up going on for most of the train ride.
Tommy continued to excitedly ramble, “I can’t wait for you to finally get to see Hogwarts! You’re gonna love it!! Wait, we have to find a way to be in the same house so we can spend more time together.”
“Houses? You mean how they work in the British education system?” Tubbo tilted his head.
“Kind of like that, yeah. Pretty much when we get there, we will be sorted into a house based on your personality or some shit. This is where you end up deciding stuff like where you bunk and eat meals for the rest of your time here.”
“The rest of my time here?! You’re telling me once we get sorted, that’s it and we are stuck there for the next seven years!” His eyes widened in shock.
“Yeah, pretty much.” Tommy nodded, giving another shrug.
“You don’t see anything wrong with how that works? Also I should mention we are like eleven, and people change, especially when growing up. So, the whole sorting based on personality sounds stupid.” Tubbo questioned.
“Maybe the hat has future vision. How should I fucking know?” He grumbled in response.
“Honestly, I’m more curious on how the whole sorting process works if anything. I just hope whatever house I’ll be placed in is the one best for me.” Tubbo smiled, glancing out the window.
By the time the Hogwarts express arrived at the station, it was already past sundown. As Tommy stepped down the stairs, he looked around as a warm summer breeze passed by. The older students walked into the tall pine forests, where they boarded onto carriages. Meanwhile, the first years were guided to the lake with rowboats already waiting for them.
“Hey, Tommy! I saved us a boat!” Tubbo waved to him, already cozily sitting in one.
“Pog!” He rushed to join him, taking up the other oar.
Once everyone was boarded, they began their voyage around the school, using the lanterns to see their path. The lake was completely still, with the exception of the ripples that came as the boats grazed the water’s surface. The shining full-moon casted down on the lake, showing a shimmering reflection of the school on top of the cliff.
Out of everyone, Tommy and Tubbo’s boat lagged the furthest behind. At one point they got off direction and steered their boat in a circle. Another time, both were fearful they would capsize. Tommy heard tales about what lurked within the water’s depths, informing Tubbo of that on their train ride there. Both were fearful, but luckily such a thing never happened. Still, it was obvious neither rowed a boat before in their lives.
“We have to speed up, Big T. We are at the very back and need to catch up to everyone else.” Tommy stated, picking up the pace as he rowed.
“This isn’t a race you know. It doesn’t matter if we are the last to arrive. It’s not like I’m in any rush to get sorted.” The brunet heaved a sigh.
“Hey, are you alright, Tubbo?” Tommy asked.
“I’m just a bit nervous, that’s all. Unlike you or your family, I don’t know anything about this magic stuff or what to expect here. What if I don’t like it?” He said, worryingly glancing down.
“Don’t worry, you’re going to love it. I’m sure of that. Besides, I’ll be here to help you around because that’s what friends are for.” Tommy reassured him, letting go of the oar to place a hand on his shoulder.
Tubbo glanced up at him and slightly smiled, “Thanks, I knew I could count on you. Now, let’s pick up the pace unless we want to be out here all night. Like you said, we got a feast to attend.” He gave a determined nod before rowing faster.
Upon reaching the docks, the students were led up a lengthy stone staircase with many twists and turns. Finally seeing Hogwarts Castle up close, Tubbo stopped in his tracks, beholding the sight with starry eyes. As nonchalant as he acted around his friend, Tommy couldn’t help but do the same. It was truly larger and more magnificent in person.
They were taken through the courtyard and entered through the gates. The large wooden doors in front of them remained shut, blocking their view of the feast inside. Approaching footsteps could be heard from the staircase to their right. Everyone at once snapped their heads to see a man walk down the stairs and stand in front of the doors to the Great Hall.
He had black hair, wore sunglasses and a long, red coat reminiscent of that of a pirate, “Hello first years, I am Captain Jordan Sparklez, deputy headmaster of Hogwarts. Tonight I’m here to explain how tonight's ceremony will work. Before I get started, are there any questions?”
“Yeah, if you’re a captain does that mean you own a ship?” The boy with sandy hair and purple eyes asked.
“Actually, I used to be captain of the aurors, but switched to teaching. But I do own a ship if that’s what you were wondering. I just request that my students refer to me as Captain instead of Professor.” He explained, “As I was saying, upon entering the Great Hall, you will all be sorted into a house based on your traits. There is Hufflepuff, house of the loyal. Ravenclaw, house of the wise. Slytherin, house of the ambitious. Then finally Gryffindor, house of the brave, my house when I was a student here.”
“That’s my dad,” The girl wearing cat ears whispered to the split haired girl with a huge grin.
Sparklez smiled at her before turning his attention to all the students and continued his speech, “The house you are placed into will be your house for the rest of your time at Hogwarts. It will determine where you sleep, sit during meals, and most important house points. Points will be given for good behavior and academic achievement, and points will be taken away for bad behavior,” He said, turning his gaze directly towards Tommy, “At the end of the year, the house with the most points will be given the House Cup. Any other questions?”
“Yeah, exactly how does this whole sorting thing work? Is it like a Buzzfeed quiz?” Tubbo asked.
“What’s a Buzzfeed?” The boy with red eyes and a black headband tilted his head.
“Well, the job of sorting first years goes to the Sorting Hat. Basically, when your name is called, you sit down, the hat is placed on your head, and it shouts the house you are put into.” Sparklez explained.
“I can understand that, but how does it work? Is the hat alive, if so does it have a soul? Can people be turned into hats? Are the hats like immortal, and if people can be turned into hats, does that mean you technically invented immortality?” Tubbo continued to ask.
“The founders of Hogwarts placed a charm on the Sorting Hat to give it life. It is sentient, but doesn’t exactly have what you would call a soul. It has been around since the school’s founding, and is over a millennia old.” Before Tubbo could open his mouth once more, Sparklez heaved a sigh, “And yes, it’s possible for people to turn into hats. I’ll answer your questions later. For now, it’s about time we start the ceremony.”
With the wave of his wand, the doors to the Great Hall started to slowly open, revealing the grand feast. Candles floated around, their kindling flames twinkling along with the stars of the artificial sky inside. Green banners with the symbol of the serpent were decorated all around the room, signifying the winners of last year’s House Cup. The older students already sitting down turned their heads. watching as all the first years walked down the center aisle.
Tommy noticed Wilbur wave to him among the Slytherins, to which he rolled his eyes, sticking to Tubbo’s side instead. They followed Sparklez until arriving at the front of the hall. The sorting hat rested dormant on a stool, and behind it sat the teachers. Tommy saw Phil among them, who gave him a smile.
All the faculty seats were filled with the exception of two in the center, the deputy headmaster that was Captain Sparklez, and the actual headmaster. As the first years gathered around, smoke filled the area. As it faded, a man stepped out of it, who looked to be around Phil and Sparklez’s age. He wore bright green robes, having combed back, dark blond hair and some stubble, most notably were his piercing emerald eyes.
He took center stage, standing behind the largest chair before clearing his throat, “Greetings students, and welcome back, and for the first years, welcome to Hogwarts. For those who don’t know me, I am Xander Dee Watson and I am the headmaster here. I look forward to meeting each one of you in this upcoming school year.” He smiled, but it didn’t exactly reach his eyes.
Headmaster Watson started to go over some announcements, most of which Tommy zoned out for. Mainly some stuff about the Forbidden Forest being forbidden. Then, about not causing explosions in the potions room, which he could only assume the worst of. He went on to explain how the whole House Cup worked again for the the millionth time, while showing his obvious favoritism towards last year's winners. If that was not obvious enough by the banners surrounding them and the amount of green he wore.
“Now, without further ado, let the sorting ceremony begin!” As Headmaster Watson took his seat, the audience let out a round of applause.
Everyone in the hall turned their gaze towards the Sorting Hat, who soon came to life and started to sing his annual song, “And the universe said I love you. And the universe said you have played the game well. And the universe said everything you need is within you. And the universe said you are stronger than you know. Andthe the universe said you are the daylight; And the universe said you are the night. And the universe said the darkness you fight is within you; And the universe said the light you seek is within you. And the universe said you are not alone. And the universe said you are not separate from every other thing. And the universe said you are the universe tasting itself, talking to itself, reading its own code. And the universe said I love you because you are love.”
The audience gave their cheers before settling down. Captain Sparklez stood right next to the hat as he read from a scroll, “Beautie Belladonna!”
The girl with split blonde and black hair walked up the stairs with a smug smile. She took her seat on the stool as Sparklez placed the hat on her head. The Sorting Hat grumbled to itself, thinking it over. Meanwhile, Beautie couldn’t help but amusingly laugh as he picked at her brain.
“Slytherin!” Upon the hat shouting that, the table of Slytherins burst into loud cheer, congratulating their newest housemate as the hat was removed from her head and she joined them.
“Eryn Nix!” As Captain Sparklez said that, the boy with red eyes who wore a bandana excitedly rushed to the chair as the hat was placed on his head.
“Hmmm… Another Nix… Better make it Gryffindor!” Eryn gave a huge grin as their table loudly shouted. One of the students with dark hair that used the house tie as a bandana stood up, giving a whoop.
Sparklez kept reading off names as first years sat on the stool, got the hat placed on their head and then sorted. Tommy started to daze off since he didn’t know any of these people. Overall, the amount of students in each house was pretty even, not that he was keeping track. While this was going on, his hands started to twitch as he was getting anxious for when he was called. Taking notice, Tubbo placed a hand on his shoulder. They exchanged smiles as he took deep breaths.
“Crumb Sparklez!” The girl who wore cat ears skipped up that stairs. Sparkles ruffled his daughter’s hair and comfortably whispered to her before setting the hat on her head. Meanwhile, she held breath in anticipation.
“Hufflepuff!” As the Sorting Hat shouted, she let out all of her hair. Crumb gave her father a hug before happily joining her house with open arms.
“Purpled Ortiz!” The boy with dark blond hair and violet eyes walked over and sat on the stool.
The hat wasn’t even fully placed on his head before shouting, “Slytherin!” He amusingly rolled his eyes, as if expecting that outcome, before sitting at their table.
“Tubbo Underscore!” Sparklez called out.
“Well, I guess it’s time for me to go.” Tubbo nervously laughed, scratching the back of his head.
“Good luck, big man.” Tommy pulled him in for a quick hug before they had to part ways.
Tubbo walked up the stairs, fidgeting in his seat as the hat was placed on his head, giving a timid but also eager smile as he let the Sorting Hat do its magic. “Hmm… Tricky… Very Tricky…” It spoke to him as he glanced up. “Not an easy one indeed, but where to put you?”
Unlike the other students that were decided almost immediately, or a few taking a minute at most, Tubbo didn’t get an answer that soon. Somehow, he managed to stump the Sorting Hat. It debated between all four houses, but eventually narrowed out Gryffindor and Slytherin. The hat was unable to decide between Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw, seeing both as fitting in different ways. As the clock ticked, the ceremony felt like it was starting to drag on and on.
“It’s been over five minutes,” A Hufflepuff boy with auburn hair and wearing colorful bandages stated, looking at his pocket watch.
“Looks like we’ve a hatstall. First one of this century.” Phil let out an amused chuckle, petting the crow on his shoulder.
“I could put you in Ravenclaw, and you would be great there. Yet at the same time, your loyalty is unlike any other I’ve seen…” It continued to debate amongst itself, and would’ve continued to do so.
“I want you to put me in the one you think is best for me.” Tubbo finally spoke up, giving a supportive smile.
The Sorting Hat grumbled to itself before coming to a final decision, “Alright then, better make it Hufflepuff!”
Everyone in the hall rose from their seats with a roar of applause, the loudest cheers of the night. They were relieved it was finally over. Tubbo let out a huge sigh of relief as the hat was removed from his head. Hopping down the stairs, he gave Tommy a small wave, while wearing the largest grin. Upon joining his housemates, Tubbo was surrounded by people congratulating him, practically beaming with joy. Happy for his friend, Tommy let out a sigh of relief too, not ready for what was next.
“Theseus Minecraft!” Captain Sparklez finally said his name.
Tommy gulped, slowly heading over and taking a seat as the hat was placed on his head. Trying to not think about it, he let his eyes wander. He glanced over at Phil, who gave a supportive smile, then spotted Technoblade at his table with the rest of his housemates. His brother was right, he definitely wouldn’t belong at Ravenclaw. His eyes drifting towards the center of the hall, he noticed Wilbur with the other Slytherins.
“Please, please don’t put me there.” Tommy muttered to himself, tightly closing his eyes as he gripped the sides of the stool
“Not Slytherin you say?” The hat curiously spoke to him.
“No, no, no, I know what you’re thinking, bitch. I swear to god if you fucking do it.” He frantically shook his head, his cautiously widened.
“No need to be rude, but that’s something we can both agree on. You wouldn’t fit in there.” The hat let out an amused laugh, as if it was just ragging this out to mess with him.
Finding solace, he looked towards Tubbo, who gleefully sat with the other Hufflepuffs. Like he said on the train ride here, he wanted them to be in the same house. That way they could always cling together. So, maybe he was a Hufflepuff after all.
Though, the Sorting Hat had different thoughts, “You know, I could put you there, but you would be bored. I already made up my mind long ago.”
“Really? Then what were you thinking?” At this rate, Tommy was getting annoyed with all the stares. Put him in any house, make it Slytherin for all he cared, the anticipation was killing him.
“Gryffindor!” As the Sorting Hat shouted its result, the audience started to clap, those wearing red were cheering.
“Fuck yeah!” Beyond thrilled, Tommy jumped from his seat, loudly shouting.
“Language!” One of the Hufflepuffs in the crowd shouted as everyone in the crowd stopped cheering, giving him awkward stares.
From the teachers table, Phil heaved a disappointed sigh, putting his hand to his face, while his brothers shared unsurprised laughs and Tubbo continued to clap. Great, he just got sorted and this was the applause he was given. This year was already off to an amazing start.
“Aren’t you going to take points off for that?” Sparklez whispered to Xander.
“You really think I would do that, on the first day? What kind of headmaster do you think I am? If one is for sure, he’s Phil’s boy alright.” He let out an amused chuckle before insisting he continue with the ceremony.
Tommy scurried to the Gryffindor table after the brief pause. He couldn’t care less about the other students being sorted since there was no one else he knew. Besides, he was towards the end of the pack, so the ceremony should be over very soon. The house table was already tightly packed, but Tommy managed to find somewhere to squeeze in.
“I have a feeling that this one is going to fit in with us just fine.” The girl with long, brown hair, who wore a rabbit hat, grinned at Tommy.
“Is it true that you’re a Minecraft, meaning you’re related to Professor Phil, Wilbur and the Technoblade? Your name was Theseus, right?” The boy with red eyes and a black bandana eagerly asked.
“Please, just call me Tommy. I never actually use my real name. Same goes with Techno and Wil. We all have these fancy birth names we never use.” He explained while rolling his eyes, before shaking the boy’s hand.
“Well, it’s nice to meet you, Tommy. I’m Eryn by the way, and this is Aimsey.” He pointed to the brown haired girl.
“Hey,” She casually waved, “I’m a second year. So, I don’t mind teaching you two a few tricks around here.”
“Thanks for the offer, but I already have an older brother in Gryffindor too. He’s pretty much the coolest brother around, and I’m sure he’s excited that we’re in the same house. Our parents were in Gryffindor too.” Eryn politely shook his head.
“I’d argue that Tommy actually has the coolest siblings around.” Aimsey amusingly chuckled.
“I guess you could say Techno and Wil are cool, but they can be pretty fucking overbearing at times. Doesn’t mean I don’t love them. I’m kind of relieved I’m not in the same house as them, so I don’t have to worry about being in their shadows all the time.” He let out a sigh of relief
“Yeah, you’re with us in the best house!” Eryn wrapped an arm around him, “Slytherins are mostly stuck-up purebloods while Ravenclaw and Hufflepuffs are whatever.”
As he said that, Tommy couldn’t help but glance over at Tubbo with a slight frown. His friend looked content there, currently chatting with Sparklez’s daughter. Still, it was a shame they weren’t placed together. Though, he was still happy for him in a bittersweet way. They were both where they belonged.
“I guess you will just have to make a name for yourself when you’re here, so you aren’t in your brother’s shadows. I mean, you’ll have lots of time since it’s only your first year and all.” Aimsey stated.
“Yeah, I’m sure I’ll eventually figure it out. I do already have a couple ideas in mind.” Tommy mischievously smiled in return.
The two exchanged grins before Eryn spoke, “You’re right Aimsey, I can see him fitting in with us perfectly.” The three couldn’t help but laugh before finally digging into their meal.
Even after the sorting ceremony was over, the festivities went on through the evening. Eventually, Headmaster Watson dismissed everyone for the night and the houses went to their common rooms. As they left the Great Hall, Tommy noticed his black tie change into red with stripes of gold. They were about ready to head to their room before he felt someone grasp at his shoulder.
“Psst… Tommy,” Glancing over his shoulder, he saw Wilbur with Technoblade and Phil standing behind him.
“You guys!” Widley grinning, he pulled them into a hug as the four shared laughs.
“Congrats on Gryffindor, we are all very proud of you! I’m sure Kristin will be ecstatic to hear the news!” Phil beamed, ruffling his son’s hair.
“Definitely not as good as Ravenclaw if I do say so myself, but pog indeed.” Technoblade nodded in approval.
“Wait, if Tommy is in Gryffindor, then what are we going to do about our bet?” Wilbur asked his twin.
“What bet?” Phil narrowed his gaze as Tommy slightly scowled at them.
“Bruh… We weren’t supposed to tell them about that!” Technoblade lightly punched his twin, noticing their unamused glares.
“Shit, you’re right…” Wilbut muttered, realizing what he’s done, “Well, I was betting that Tommy would be in Slytherin, while you were betting that he would be in Hufflepuff. But since neither of us won, what do you suppose we do about the money?”
“Well, if we’re judging it by that, then I guess I’ve technically won. So, pay up.” Phil stated, crossing his arms.
“Heh?”
“What?” The twins turned towards their father in surprise.
“I knew Tommy would be in Gryffindor this whole time.” He explained, crossing his arms.
“Then why didn’t you say anything sooner?” Technoblade grumbled, rolling his eyes.
“Yeah, there’s no way you could’ve known!” Wilbur spat, defensively putting his hands on his hips.
“I’ve seen students be sorted for decades, so you kind of get an understanding of how the whole process works. Besides, this was something Tommy needed to experience for himself. There wouldn’t be any fun in ruining the surprise now, would there?” Phil smugly smirked, holding out his hand.
“Fine…” Technoblade groaned, tossing him a few galleons. Meanwhile Wilbur flipped him off before handing his coins over before going separate ways.
“Just for that I’m giving you both extra homework in potion’s class” Phil jokingly shouted to his sons before turning towards his youngest, “Now, you should be going on your way too. You have a big day ahead of you tomorrow, but I also wanted to mention again that I’m very proud of you tonight.
“Thanks, Dadza,” Tommy nodded, giving him one last hug before joining the rest of his house.
Following the other Gryffindors, he headed up the moving staircases before reaching the seventh floor. They walked down the long hallway, illuminated in torches before reading the end. Upon arriving, there was a painting of a peculiar woman named Helga, who was pretty annoying if he said so himself, insistenting on singing instead of listening to them. After Aimsey shouted the password multiple times, she eventually let them in the common room.
The inside gave off a rustic, cozy feeling with the dim lighting, carved wooden furniture, soft rugs and banners and paints across every wall. The burning fireplace gave off a comforting scene, occasionally crackling softly. It made Tommy want to jump on the couch and fall asleep right away. He already felt at home. The room was decorated in red and gold.
Did he ever mention red was his favorite color? Tommy walked up the spiral staircase and headed to the boy’s side on the second floor, only to walk up a bunch of more stairs. Once he arrived at his room, he claimed a bed, tossing his luggage down and flopping on it, not paying attention to anyone else he was rooming with. As he closed his eyes, he couldn’t help but wonder and look forward to what was next.
