“How did you…”
Hans trails off as Henry rises to his feet, every movement taut as stretched leather. The birds screech in the trees; Henry turns his back to the fire, to Hans, and gazes across the overlook into the forest below. His gloved hands are in fists by his sides. Morning light glints faintly on the rusted rivets of his brigandine.
Here it comes, whispers a faint voice in the back of Hans’s head.
Henry tracks down a poacher in the woods. Unrelated: Lord Hans Capon is experiencing possibly the lowest moment of his life to date. One thing leads to another, someone takes a sword (?) wound in the thigh, and everything gets more complicated.
Set during the canon KCD 2 storyline; spoilers for the Bird of Prey quest.

Summary
Hans is rapidly starting to hate Ruthard Palace. He’s sick of staring at nothing but the Ruthard’s dour decorative choices, the same miserable colours and motifs in Kuttenberg that he’d had plenty of time to grow weary of in Maleshov. He’s sick of not being able to say this with the would-be scion of the Ruthards somehow always within earshot, lest he cause offence. He's sick of Brabant, who he’s now spent far too much time with and has heard every one of his stories at least twice. He’s sick of Žižka and Hynek cutting him out of conversations, out of decisions, out of his rightful place at the table.
He’s been here for barely three days, but if he has to remain within these four walls for even ten minutes more, he’s going to lose his mind.
Henry co-ordinates a jailbreak to give Hans a small reprieve from his effective house arrest, and Hans gets a glimpse into what Henry was doing in Kuttenberg while he was being held in Maleshov.

For the first time in their lives, they live as lovers.
Trosky is under Ištván’s protection while Von Bergow travels to Maleshov with the Pirkstein heir in tow and, for a blessed moment, it is only them. No chancellors or knightly protectors looking at them with knowing eyes, no enemies beyond the walls. The robber barons and the bastard are safely bound in the dungeon, the horses are stabled, and there is time to take some short respite.

All at once, he is reminded of something Godwin once told him, about some grand poem making a stir in Italy, in which a fellow ventured into the bowels of Hell to find all its sinners suffering a punishment which rhymed with the wickedness of their transgression. As he lies thrashing on shaking knees next to his lord, he thinks must have slipped and fallen into the same abyss.
Nebakov Fortress has been destroyed with Hans and Henry still inside.

"Sir Hans Capon of Leipa and Pirkstein," he says abruptly, and, with a smile, releases her—physically. His hand now free, he throws it in a gesture to the seat opposite. "Stay. Have a drink with me."
Theresa goes to fetch ale for her uncle and instead encounters an extremely irritating noble with his own agenda.

Unfortunately for them, he is also funny, theatrical, and decent to look at. Hiraeth is nothing if not a firm believer in making bad decisions for the bit, and he seems like a mistake waiting to be made.
Astarion is a slave -- or was a slave. He doesn't know which yet. All he knows is that his freedom depends on another; a chipper, powerless bard, whose large mouth won't close and whose songs are more annoying than entertaining. He has no choice but to let them lead, as those who would better oppose them seem to inexplicably accept their authority. But authority is exactly what he desires, and if Hiraeth has it, then he will have them. It is, of course, only their protection he wants. And not for the pretty love songs they sing to be about him.
