Summary
Alarm overtook Kaveh’s expression as he looked back and forth between Alhaitham and the matra, dropping his sketchpad and leaping to his feet. “Why is there a guard here? Did you get hurt?”
“Some idiot decided poisoning me to obtain state secrets would be an optimal use of a Tuesday morning,” Alhaitham replied with a deep sigh.
Kaveh’s hands hovered uselessly in the air for a few moments as he stared at Alhaitham. “I’m sorry, what?”
Leaning back against the wall, Alhaitham let out a weary exhale. “Truth serum,” he said tiredly, raking his fingers through his hair then dropping his hand down to rub his throat. “I can’t lie.”
Kaveh’s eyes widened. “Oh my gods. Are you - are you okay?” Hurrying forward, Kaveh - with his blessedly fully covered legs - guided Alhaitham onto the divan, hands steady despite the panic in his voice.
“I don’t know. I’m just glad you’re wearing pants,” was all Alhaitham managed to answer.

Summary
Alhaitham is living the life he has always wanted, but a creeping sense of loneliness takes over his mind. He adopts a cat, and schedules a vet appointment with his ex-best friend:
To his own surprise, the sides of his eyes prickled with the threat of tears, and he found himself unsure of what to do. He did not want to be seen in such vulnerability, but his apartment was as empty as it always was, and so, why the irrational urge to hold the crying back? “Crying is a natural mechanism for releasing stress-related hormones,” he had told Kaveh years before. “Why are you resisting? Cry. There is no rational reason why you should be embarrassed.”
How stupid he had been. Even with no audience, the thought of letting his sadness overflow from his head onto the physical realm seemed daunting, and he simultaneously tried to prevent the flow of tears while letting them happen. A broken, choked sound escaped his throat, and it took him a moment to realise it was his own sob. It sounded foreign to his ears, but they kept escaping his tightly shut lips, until he found himself too exhausted to fight the instinct.

Summary
"My body! That's all I have left."
Alhaitham stares at him in bewilderment.
"What are you-"
"I don't want to owe anymore debts!" Kaveh yells abruptly, clenching his fists. "Nothing in life is free, I know that. I've learned that the hard way. And the last person I want to be indebted to is you."
Kaveh can't pay rent, he hasn't for eight long month, there just isn't enough money. But the last thing he wants is another thing for Alhaitham to dangle over his head.
He initiated it, but still, he never expected to find a new rent contract slipped under his bedroom door with the payment changed from mora to sexual intercourse.
AKA; Alhaitham and Kaveh use rent as an excuse to explore each other's bodies until their greed leads to more than just mere mutual lust.

Summary
When Alhaitham sees Kaveh's face, unobscured and perfect and freckled, he understands, suddenly, as if cool water has been poured over him, what the poets saw when they saw they gazed up at the sun and then the stars. He understands what it means to be spun from stardust and he understands, more than ever, the fascination with the yellow ball in the sky that's decorated Kaveh's skin with freckles.
He understands, fully, what it means to see and know.
He sees and he knows and and there is still plenty he doesn't know, doesn't understand, but now he knows why space exists between his fingers. He knows why the sun is beloved, why the stars have poets turning their heads upwards to gaze upon them.
//or, au where everyone's faces are blurry until you fall in love with your soulmate, and this only makes life a little more complicated once they learn that a bond shared between soulmates can be revoked.
