Summary
“whatcha drawing?” will turned so fast it was like he had been slapped, falling off the fence onto his back with a small scream. His legs held up high against the fence, while his bag and head had been slightly cushioned by the grass underneath his fall. Hair now undoubtably needing a wash and filled with general dirt and grossness. Holding his sketchbook closed against his chest tightly with both arms while his hair was, of course, all over the place, for saints’ sake he had only just washed it!
“Holy shit, I'm so sorry” the boy jumped over the fence, probably hoping to catch him before he fell, but was too late. Holding out his hand for will to take.
Will looked at him transfixed, unable to take his eyes away. Before finally realizing the predicament he was in, turned away to brush off the multitude of dirt and grass overflowing on him. Holding onto the hand that was held out for him he pulled himself up. Only to look back into the others eyes unsure of what to say, just as he was about to speak the other boy beat him to it.
“My name is Mike Wheeler,”

“Okay!” Will cut her off, embarrassed beyond belief. “Sure. Fine. Jesus. I don’t know! It’s not like that, though.”
The thing was, he had sort of noticed it too. But he’d thought it was just the world sliding back to place, righting itself as Mike began acting like he did back when they were kids, back when he was Mike’s favorite. This was how things used to be. This was how Will liked it, anyways—Mike’s undivided attention.
“It doesn’t have to mean anything,” Will whispered. He thought, well, maybe he didn’t notice anything because he didn’t want to.
“He’s sweet on you, though,” Jane said.

The smile that broke out on Mike’s face was so wide that it might have flown away with the birds that danced in the air above them.
“We can be crazy together, yeah?” Mike offered, extending his hand out and holding out his pinky finger. An open invitation.
Will decided to bend his ‘don’t lie’ rule, just this once. He didn’t feel crazy. Weird, a half-step behind his friends, and painfully shy, yes. But if Mike felt better being crazy with him, then he would wear that badge with honor.
“Okay,” he agreed softly, pinky clasping around Mike’s with a tremble, “crazy together.”
