It was just for a laugh.
It had been a quick comment John made. A quip. A witty remark.
Of course, he didn’t really mean it.
John had jokingly said to ‘push Paul out first, he’s the prettiest’ when he saw the bombarding crowds of fans awaiting them. Everyone laughed. Even Paul laughed. But the comment lingered in Paul's head for weeks. Torturing him, poking him in the hip like a thorn and keeping him awake.

During their 1965 filming of Help, John learns something about Paul's devotion
Paul likes the attention, craves it, John knows, though he’ll never be able to get Paul to admit to it. Like a show dog, he thinks as Paul stumbles on the snow again, scowling and waiting to be collected up by one of the crew, wrapped up in his black furs and snow boots. It’s greedy, really. Someone should put him in his place, train him to behave better.

Summary
Something that people fail to mention about having any sort of creative inclination is the branch of vividness that comes along with it. Oftentimes, when he sleeps, he’s blessed with the faint fingerpicking of a tune he’s able to use in his next song, other times, he’s left to the devices of the most desolate part of his mind.
John feels Paul’s eyes on him and looks back. He grins and Paul tastes burnt wine on his lips.
Paul starts having random dreams, except they're not that random, and they're most definitely more than dreams.
