San had heard a saying, before. Something about being soft enough to hold a bird in your hands and not hurt it, but steady enough to keep it so it didn’t fly away. He didn’t want to be rough, but that was kind of what he’d ended up being, for a while.
He could lie and say he didn’t know what changed it. What had turned his working hands into softer, kinder ones. What had softened him into something malleable enough to be loved. What allowed him to keep that little bird, sitting happily in his palm, deciding on its own that that was where it wanted to stay. That was where it felt safest, most loved.
He’d never managed to keep hold of something so fleeting before.

Rerir chuckled, the sound filling Aether’s nerves. "Run, Aether? In that little slip of silk? Where would you go that I wouldn't follow? Besides," he paused as they reached a sleek, black car parked just a few feet away, "you wouldn't make it to the corner." He said.
He released Aether’s arm only to open the passenger door "Get in. Unless you prefer to stand here and continue arguing with me in public."
Aether hesitated, his eyes darting to the street and venue, then to the vehicle. With a defeated sigh, he ducked his head and slid onto the plush leather seat.
