I can’t pretend anymore, okay?” His chest heaves and he waits. For the hit, for the remedy, he’s not sure.
Stratt closes her eyes and schools her expression to one of dead calm, one that still falters at the edges. “You of all people know there are lines I can’t cross.”
He’s so close now she can feel the warmth of his breath on her skin. “Can’t? Or won’t?”

“I have some news to share with you,” Eva begins, and Grace’s eyebrows furrow together.
“Okay,” he says apprehensively. “Hit me.”
She takes a deep breath and meets his searching gaze. “I’m pregnant.” For a moment, the scientist is at an uncharacteristic loss for words. “It’s yours,” she adds quickly, watching as his face shifts from stunned confusion to shock to what begins as a hint of a smile and quickly breaks into a huge, warm grin. Relief floods her body.
“I- that’s- Eva, that’s…” Grace reaches across the table and takes her smaller hands in his, tears welling in his eyes, voice thick with emotion. “That’s incredible. That’s… Eva, we’re going to have a baby.”
