He is a five-hundred-year-old puppet, and he had tried to dethrone the God of Wisdom even before Dottore ever did. His waking years had taught him to hold his emotions close, or else the world would pounce and leave nothing in its wake.
And yet, he's just a being who's loved so clearly. Still a shit, though, as he rolls his eyes and looks away, yet Kazuha still sees the lopsided smile his wandering companion is desperately trying to hide, even after all these years.
Love, in all his five hundred years of being, is such a pain in the ass to handle with. It's also the most rewarding, though, so he has no other choice but to figure it out again and again.
