Selene laughs again, equal parts fond and frustrated. While she knows that it can be difficult to break out of established patterns of thinking, it is also fairly annoying and disheartening to have to say the same thing over and over again, only to be disbelieved each time.
“Silly girl,” she scolds, flicking Iris’ forehead with one finger, “how many times have I told you, I’m not fooled by that mask anymore. I know that you can be whiny, sulky, and needy, and I love that about you.”]

Iris pauses; has she gotten so transparent? She turns around to look at Selene, their faces a hair’s breadth away. Selene’s emotions are painted all over her face, Iris wonders if hers are the same.
“Do you want to go home?” Selene says, patient.
“No,” Iris shakes her head. She pauses, curling fingers around Selene’s wrist. Her discomfort eases—the dim bathroom lighting, the soft hum of the hand dryer, the muffled chatter just a room away—the world wanes, as her focus shapes itself around the girl before her.
Iris and Selene clumsily try again.

Natalie is silent for a moment, digesting Lottie’s words with heavy consideration. It’s as if she’s chewing them, distinguishing the tendons of the sentence, the palette of the phrases. The thumb beneath Lottie’s shirt never stops moving.
“Do you want me to help you?” Nat asks, her voice low. It’s huskier than before, and Lottie opens her eyes and pulls back slightly, scanning Natalie’s face. Her irises are darker.
“And how would you do that?”
“You just need to let go for a while,” Natalie murmurs against Lottie’s lips, swollen with love and shining beneath the hazy ceiling light. “You just need to not be in control anymore. Do you want someone else to be in control, Lottie?”
