There was this day—cold, late March, wind still mean—that stuck in Noelle’s mind like a grain of rice behind the gums.
She’d ducked into the corner store after school. Her mom didn’t like her going there, said the magazines by the register were trash and the cashier had too many piercings. But Noelle wanted a soda. Something sweet, just for her.
Kris and Susie were there already. Neither of them saw her. They were standing by the fridges in the back, heads close together. Susie was laughing at something Kris said. Kris’s hands were in their pockets, a little hunched, but their shoulders relaxed in that way they never were around anyone else.
And it was nothing. It was two people in a corner store. They weren’t touching, weren’t kissing, weren’t anything. But it was everything.
Noelle left without the soda.

"Gonna blow me off?" Enjin grins, too crooked to be worth anything. The churning in his stomach won't abate. He's been knocked off his own axis since the appointment was called, getting all in his own head after seeing Corvus laughing at the bar yesterday in the company of somebody else. Or maybe Enjin's been wrong for longer than that. His body turned to mulch after Corvus held his hand, the man pulling him out of danger. The touch felt earthen, like something real.
Or: Enjin pushes but Corvus never gives.

Summary
The first line addresses the recipient, but the name had been scored out so harshly Zanka can feel the indents through the back with a pass of his thumb. The first word is most certainly Dear, and he can just about make out an a and what falls between an m and an n in the next one, but anything else is a lost cause.
My name has an a at the start, his thoughts supply, there's an n next to that.
His rational side doesn't bother to brush it off as a simple coincidence, and he feels his heart stammer in his chest.
After leaving his window open to sleep, a mysterious love letter finds its way into Zanka's hands. The name of whoever it's addressed to is unintelligible, but that doesn't stop him from getting his hopes up, especially when the contents start to sound strikingly similar to Jabber's words from the past.
