He stood out in the dim light of the dive bar. There was something about him, underneath the white curls and pretty smile and underneath the warm cologne that hid the faint scent of blood, something divinely interesting to Adrien. Death clung to every inch of him, singing sweetly, seducing them as they watched him put on the same performance he’d given the other nights. The same performance, always to a different person, and death hung off him, draping over his lithe form as he leaned close to his target and whispered something in his ear. It stuck like a web as the victim turned a bright pink and stammered a reply.
Out of sight of his victim, the corpse looked sick with disgust.

A modern setting that still maintains the race and classes of the game, but in this version there's no mindflayer plot, no tadpoles to bring them all together. Just two incredibly messed up people trying to find some meaning outside of the powers that control them. Plays incredibly fast and loose with 5e and game rules and canon.

Summary
Astarion found that he enjoyed their trust in him, however marginal it was, and he told himself it was just because it made them easier to manipulate. If he wanted to find a cure for the tadpole and keep his freedom he would need allies. Playing by their rules was the easiest way to keep them on his side. That when once he really had his freedom and was no longer at any risk of sprouting tentacles, he could ditch them. He had to remind himself of this a few extra times as they had picked up another traveling companion at the druid’s grove.
Astarion had done his best to keep their commitments to a minimum, but Gale had looked distraught when he refused to help the Tiefling refugees and Astarion had realized that convincing them that he was on their side would require more selfless behavior than he was expecting.

Koschei sat next to her, leaving a small gap between their bodies, and followed her gaze up to the stars, leaning back on his hands.
He’d grown his beard out a little more than he used to.
“You left.” It wasn’t quite an accusation but there was an edge to his voice.
She exhaled softly at that. She never had been good at goodbyes. Or feelings. “I’ve never been good at staying in one place, you know that.”
He snorted derisively at that. “Now you acknowledge it.”
“If you just came up here to tell me about my failings, don’t bother.” Theta snapped.
“Actually I came up here to come clean to you. Not with any ulterior motives, just…you deserve to know everything.”

“Ah,” Gale looks ever-so-slightly abashed. Only slightly, though. Mostly he looks a little proud of himself. “You know how the receptionist is always asleep?”
Astarion's eyebrows shoot up.
“Gale Dekarios, you shady thing.”
“I only borrowed it! He's never been awake enough to ask about spares, so. It was easier to just sort it out myself.”
“It would have been easier to ask me,” Astarion points out.
“Mmmm,” Gale hums, doubtfully. “I don't know if I'd ever consider you the ‘easier’ option, Astarion, I feel that would be doing your commitment to cantankerousness a great disservice.”
I'd be extremely easy if you weren't so fucking annoying, Astarion thinks.

Summary
Koschei's name was drawn the year before hers, and he slaughtered almost half the tribute field personally, claiming the first victory for their District and becoming an overnight sensation. Media darling Caesar Flickerman had dubbed him The Master, a title that stuck, and he plays his part well, but as soon as the cameras are off, darkness always comes floating back towards the surface. He mentored Theta while his own pain was still fresh, and dismissed her as a lost cause as soon as the second name was drawn. The other tribute for District 3 that year was Koschei's friend, classmate, and neighbor, and Koschei all but told her that he would throw her to the wolves and focus the entirety of his attention on supporting her male counterpart.
That favoritism did not matter in the end. His friend died first, and Theta won the shortest games on record. Thirty-six hours, one meticulously engineered mass slaughter, and it was over.
Fifteen years have passed since then, and he still has not forgiven her.
