I could not imagine—given his wide sphere of movement—that I would ever see him again. And yet I thought of him almost every day. The Russian novels I had to read for school reminded me of him; Russian novels, and Seven Pillars of Wisdom, and so too the Lower East Side—tattoo parlors and pierogi shops, pot in the air, old Polish ladies swaying side to side with grocery bags and kids smoking in the doorways of the bars along Second Avenue."

Summary
Boris hadn't imagined it like this at all. In fact, this is the polar opposite of what he had imagined for their celebratory get-together, for the last Christmas they will spend in each other’s company — but that's Theo. Always full of surprises, usually nasty ones if he's to be honest. But Boris doesn't mind. That's life — rarely do things play out exactly according to the plan. If he has to clean up Theo's vomit off of the hallway tiles for Christmas, then so be it.
Boris almost laughs to himself. Just like old times.

A harsh silence fell over them, and Boris continued softly.
“I feel like I’m forgetting something…”
Theo bit his lip, contemplating how to answer. “We um, we never really…we weren’t big on labels but…I guess we were boyfriends.”
“Really?” Boris looked at him in awe, eyes almost sparkling at the news. “How did I land someone so cute?”
Theo couldn’t help laughing at that. In a weird way, it made him feel better, but at the same time?
It felt like his heart was being torn in two.
OR: Boris' father hurt him a bit more seriously than he thought when he hit him over the head with the cane.
