We spent hours joking and laughing at the bar over a bottle of vodka, our heads together, just like we had done as boys. Trying to convince myself that the only reason I was holding my hand on his shoulder, giggling in his ear, my face mere inches away from his, was because otherwise he wouldn't hear me over the music, even though he was the one doing most of the talking. I had been drinking considerably less than normal over the past few months, so it didn't take me long to start feeling disoriented and weirdly courageous, the mass of people around me blending into each other, becoming unidentifiable like droplets of water in an ocean, with only Boris standing out as a steady beacon of light.
Set after the book ends, Theo and Boris meet again after a year and half.

"Theo emerged from the basement with his half-full mug to hear a cluster of voices whispering, but no rung bell to have alerted him when they appeared, or how long they’d been waiting. They were young-- around the same age as Theo although probably a bit younger-- all in multiple, piled layers and very well prepared for the New York winter weather.
There was a red-headed man, standing in the center of the three, his elbow resting on the counter; a blond to his right, rubbing his one eye and standing with a frail, slumped posture; and an average, unassuming man standing against the counter to the red-head’s left. All three were staring at the multi-colored flag they had chosen to hang, discreetly and carefully: above the front desk, to the right and far above the average height of a doorframe."

Theo and Boris are not dating. Despite what waiters in restaurants assume (‘Will that be one bill today?’) and all their friends’ jokes, they are definitely not dating.
Sure, they spend more time together than apart—they like the same things, why wouldn’t they do them together? And sure, Boris is a touchy person and Theo never pulls away when he fiddles with his hands or when he throws his arms around him. And Theo doesn’t complain when Boris sits on his lap when they run out of chairs at a friend’s house, but its not like he would make Boris sit on the floor.
And sure, occasionally they fuck which might give people the wrong idea. But honestly, they really are just friends.
Or: A friends with benefits au where Theo is aware of his feelings but that does Not mean he knows how to act on them. Also Boris is a musician and they've been out of contact for two years.
