The evening had been going to plan, Emmrich thought, until it very suddenly wasn't. He'd asked Rook to dine with him in the Necropolis, which had been delightful, and the walk back to his little pied-à-terre had flown by. But now they were making overtures towards his bedroom, and Rook's demeanor had changed entirely.
"Emmrich?" she asked, brow knitted with worry. For a woman who was usually so animated, so graceful, it was a concerning sight.
"Yes, darling?" he said.
"I have to tell you something."

Emmrich is almost shirtless when Rook finds him, clawing at his armor, gear strewn across the floor. The sight is unimaginable from a man as tidy as he is. His neck is bare, one boot unlaced, one naked forearm while the other is still clad in its long leather glove… He's managed to work himself into such a state that every garment he wears is half-undone, like he couldn't decide what to take off first and ended up trying to do everything at once.
Emmrich's been acting a little unusual ever since he was hit by backlash from a Venatori spell. Rook, considerate guy that he is, offers to lend a helping hand.

Emmrich briefly entertains a vision of pastoral, sun-dappled fields, a tumble in the clover and a tangle of limbs entwining. The sort of scene he used to read about in books, youthful indiscretions in sumptuous Orlesian gardens… how funny that he should be thinking of such a thing now, after so long.
As the sun sets on the Hall of Valor, Rook convinces Emmrich to sneak away for some time alone. In a tiny utility closet. Isn't this the kind of thing that's better left to the young (and flexible)?
