This is the part he likes best: when the mission is complete but they’re still riding the high, hearts pumping from the exertion of keeping themselves alive. This is when Ghost is at his most unreserved, when he seems the most unlike The Ghost. It’s as if a good op helps him remember what it feels like to be human. And it’s in these moments, when he’s almost effusive, casual about a pat on the shoulder or a hand at the back of the neck—when he seems to need the physical reassurance that they made it out in one piece—that Soap thinks the mask looks the most like the prop it is. It doesn’t scare him; it only makes him sad.

“Gonna be frogs someday, they will,” his granddad had said, crouching down in the mud, smelling of manure and sun-baked earth. “So be gentle with ‘em, like.” He’d taken Simon’s wrist so softly in his own hand and lowered the tadpoles back into the murky water. “Your brother likes to smush ‘em, don’t he? But we’re gonna give ‘em a chance to see what bein’ frogs is all about. Isn’t that right?”
