Maybe leaving the village nearby was not the best idea. Surely, having your own home and peace was wonderful, but not really when a annoying creature keeps stalking you, constantly knocking on all of your house's doors, and leaving you gory stuff you don't care. Maybe Knocker's been trying to scare you this whole time, but when he noticed he wasn't able to, he started annoying you on purpose to see you mad at him. Perhaps he enjoys seeing you angry, as the weirdo he is.
