"You're incredible," he said to her mouth, and she knew he meant it. Not in the way Mulder had, but in the truest sense of the word: unbelief, pure, undistilled awe.
"So are you," she said, and meant it. He had come to her when she needed someone, no matter how much she didn't want to admit it. He wasn't Mulder. He never tried to be. And for that she didn't have to kill him, and didn't want to.

“You think damn loud, y’know that?” came a muffled voice from the next bed.
“Sorry.”
“Here I thought I’d be the one up all night.” Doggett stretched with a long groan, limbs gangly and uncoordinated, too much for the bed. “What’s wrong?”
Skinner shook his head. “Nothing. White noise.” He tapped his forehead, just between his eyebrows. “Like a busted radio dial I can’t switch off. Been that way since I can remember.”
“And you’re the one telling us to let it all rest.” It was said with an odd amount of fondness, so much so it caught Skinner off guard. “Anything help?”
“Usually just wait till it burns itself out. Go to the gym maybe.” Skinner waved his hand. “It’s fine. I’ll manage.”
“Well, respectfully, I ain’t going to the gym.” Doggett stretched again. Skinner tried not to listen to the groan or the way he hummed, satisfied apparently, as he rolled out of bed. “But I will go for a beer if you want.”
_____After a particularly difficult case leaves them burnt out and unable to sleep, Skinner and Doggett go for a beer at a bar owned by an old friend and the conversation gets a little heavier than either of them had hoped.

It’s kind of a bizarre thing, to be tucking your boss in for a nap in your own office, but on the list of things that John Doggett has done since he started in the X-Files, it’s not the weirdest. It’s not even top ten weirdest. Dana even keeps a blanket in the office, for napping purposes.
After Mulder's funeral, John really wants to make sure that Skinner's okay.
