Shane huffed out a breath and looked at Ilya. "There's no movie star girlfriend. We broke up."
Ilya's eyes widened.
"She's great, but—" Shane swallowed hard. "We're just not compatible, I guess?"
The look on Ilya's face was completely indecipherable.
"What about you? Where's your—" Shane broke off, unable to bring the word "girlfriend" to his lips.
Ilya began to say something, but was interrupted by the girlfriend in question.
"Hey, baby," she said sweetly, sliding in front of Ilya with her back to Shane.
Ilya's eyes darted to Shane. "Ah, hi. Tatyana, this is—"
"I want to go swimming," she said, and Shane couldn't see her face, but heard the pout in her voice.
Her Russian-accented voice.
Shane felt sick.

“NO, Ilya,” Shane interrupts him, and Ilya greatly enjoys watching Troy’s head snap towards Shane, who glows like a freshly picked tomato.
And that’s fine, really. Being Shane Hollander’s husband means he has so much material to work with.
“Okay, well, what about the time you bought us a sex building?” he asks, and barely gets the sentence out before Zane Boodram makes a loud exclamation.
“A what now?” he asks, as the eyes of everyone on the plane flit back and forth from Shane to Ilya.
“Definitely not,” Shane snaps, and Ilya grins.
“What about the time you panicked so much you got into a relationship with Rose Landry because I said your first name?”
There’s an audible intake of breath, and Ilya watches as a number of emotions cross Shane’s face before it finally settles into something that looks resigned.
“Fine,” Shane says with a roll of his eyes, and the team cheers as Ilya’s smile grows so wide he knows his cheeks will start to hurt soon.
Ilya claps his hands in front of him. “It all started with tuna melts.”

[Harris lets out his signature booming laugh, and Ilya grins widely.]
Harris: You maybe have a little too much fun.
Ilya: There is no such thing.
Shane: But what’s the point of the questions if we’re already in love? Like, we’re married. You were there when it happened.
Harris: Yes, but they can help you deepen your connection, and it makes for good content. People love your love.
Ilya: I think we had a pretty deep connection last night, am I right?
[Ilya holds his hand up for a high-five from Shane, but Shane only glares, and Harris looks slightly horrified. Ilya looks back expectantly, but when Shane doesn’t move, Ilya high-fives himself. With the sound of the clap, the screen goes black.]

Ilya Rozanov has been drafted by Boston, the number one pick overall, but his father doesn't want him moving to America and so takes steps to block his visa. He's going to have to go back to Russia and stay there forever and that, thinks Shane Hollander, is wrong.
It's so wrong that Shane can't stop himself from doing something about it. Even though that something is the most reckless, the only reckless thing he's ever done in his life. He marries Rozanov in secret, to keep him out of Russia and put him on a path to Canadian citizenship.
Shane's got a five-year plan to get him there and when you have a plan nothing can go wrong. Right? Right. When you have a solid plan and a marriage that's on paper only there's no risk of feelings getting involved. Not on Rozanov's part and certainly not on Shane's.
