Summary
“Is my brother truly dead, do you think?”
Ormund turns then, to stare at those wide eyes and that straightened, noble back. So recognizable, all the beauty of a maid in a song and the bearing of a prince from a fantasy. “Such unexpected insolence,” he murmurs, “from a mere squire.”
The boy’s lip curls. “Is my brother truly dead, my lord?”
in the dark of the night, lord ormund hightower, guardian to prince daeron targaryen, converses with his squire.

Summary
“The last few days have been…trying.”
“I can imagine.”
“You cannot.” Valarr surprises himself. He has always been good; he has never spoken out of turn to Father or Grandfather, has always been courteous and polite no matter what. He has never snapped at his father, or behaved impudently.
But he has been scraped raw since the horns sounded that misty morning.
“You cannot imagine it,” he continues.
baelor and valarr, father and son, and the moments between them on the cusp of great change.

Summary
Baelor would pull back. Baelor would know that Valarr is in some ways still a child and needs to be comforted as a child would. To be held, but not like this, held as a father holds his child, not a lover’s embrace. Baelor would remind him that Maekar must act the father to Valarr, who is fatherless, and not grow dizzy with the desire to part his nephew’s young lips with his tongue. Baelor would be better. Always better. Better than his sons, better than his brothers.
But he is gone, and his lessers remain.
The selfishness is still here within him. It has been a long time since Dyanna. A long time since he has touched, been touched in return. And if the kisses taste of salt and the slight tinge of wine, what of it? Was it ever going to taste any different?
baelor's brother and baelor's son mark the anniversary of his passing - and excise some emotions in the process.

Summary
Aerion's always been a little possessive over his Uncle Baelor. His death forces all of that onto Valarr instead, one of that last living things left of Baelor himself that was worth anything as far as he was concerned; turning all of Aerion's sick obsessions into something much deeper for his cousin.
-
There was a draw in him to cause a scene. To send a panic through the guards; he had gone to Prince Valarr's room, and it was empty. Search the grounds at once, what if someone had hurt him? Satisfaction bloomed hot under his skin at the thought; he surely wouldn't be able to find his way to Baelor's room after that, but neither could Valarr.
If he did that, how hard would he have to work to drag his uncle's guard down again?
The satisfaction soured, a rancid taste at the back of his throat as he swallowed it all down and let his door shut instead.

Summary
It’s a cursed thing, and it’s Maekar who wills it in the world. It’s Maekar who tries to silence the shadows of his shame and guilt by cursing his brother to such an existence.

Summary
Maekar’s face was mottled with purple bruising, a deep cut brushing across the bridge of his nose. His skin was sallow and pale, and his hair limp. Up this close, Valarr could see the pitted pox marks hidden behind the silver beard, heavy lines etched in his uncle’s skin from years of strain caused by war, the loss of his wife and his misbehaving children. The lines were deeper now than they were before the trial, before he had swung his mace through his father’s skull.
Ugly. Was the cruel thought that came to mind. Maekar was not handsome like his father. Was not anything like his father.
Baelor Targaryen lays close to death in Ashford Castle three days after the Trial of Seven, and Valarr hates his uncle almost as much as he hates himself.

Summary
“You’re the least to deserve a punishment," the words are dragged on his tongue, bitterly. “Especially for that.” It comes out harsher than he thought.
“If you believe so. But please, uncle, do consider my proposal. Do not reject me in spite,” he brushes Maekar’s shoulder with his palm as he passes by, “...Of mistakes.”
Which one of his latest, many mistakes, Maekar cannot say: the fact he had to stroke himself until he came at the thought of Baelor’s boy moaning on his lips, or the wrong swing of his mace at Ashford.
( Or: in the aftermath of Baelor's death, as the Spring Sickness spreads through the realm, Valarr summons Maekar at court to be part of his council. They mourn how they can. )
