He had just stood at the threshold of her door and stared at her in that way of his, resolute, takeout in one hand and a bag with homemade food from their coworkers in the other. She was so grateful, so relieved, that she couldn’t bring herself to pretend to refuse him.
No, they didn’t talk about it. How he was the one she paged, how in her panic as the first contractions started, the only person she could think of as the pain struck her, the only person that could comfort her, was him.
