Because noticing something so small and inconsequential about her feels strangely intimate.
As if he’s unconsciously holding on to every little expression and mannerism she has without meaning to.
So he brushes the topic aside.
And as the conversation moves on, he doesn’t miss the soft exhale she lets out, or the way her shoulders droop ever so slightly in relief, a reaction that mirrors his own, albeit for completely different reasons.
Or, Multi starts noticing little things about Katie unconsciously.

BEN had been twelve for eleven years, and Jeff had been thirteen for nine. They had met eight and a half years ago when BEN had threatened Jeff with an electrically charged baseball bat because Jeff had wandered into BEN's at-the-time house, assuming it was vacant, and they'd been inseparable ever since. Apparently the Tall Man (or 'the boss', as BEN and Jeff almost exclusively referred to him) had seen fit to keep them together for safety, and in terms of interventions that the Operator had made into their lives, this one had been fairly well-received.
