“When was this about glory?”
He steps closer. Hands at her hips, caging her in. He can feel the warmth of her. Leans in. A moth reeled helplessly towards a flame. Knows what a terrifying picture he must make, all skull mask and tac vest. And yet - she does not shy away.
If anything, she leans closer.
In training, his drill sergeant taught him that the best way to defend a grab was to move into it. To follow the momentum. Maybe that’s all she’s doing, following the momentum, but it scares him. Terrifies him. This girl. And he, on a string like a puppet.
“I’m not after bloody glory,” he says. “If I was after glory I would’ve chosen a different fucking job, aye? Maybe an EMT. A Firefighter. Not this.”
“I won’t do it,” She says, but she’s wavering. There in that small, mouldering room. That moment between them and the security camera in the corner and his selfish, selfish fucking hands.
He leaves but can feel the warmth of her on his skin hours after.(In which artists and soldiers alike are subject to the whims of love, loath as they both are to admit.)

[unknown number]: fk it. what ar yo goin do? disvcarge me.?I stared at the nearly incomprehensible message. Clearly, whoever was on the other end was in no state of mind to be typing. My finger hovered over the three dots in the top corner, ready to block them, but I hesitated. In that moment, another message came through.
[unknown number]: wish u wld. sick if it all. kick me our alrdy.
[unknown number]: less then I can off mself witou geying u in trobleBefore I even realized what I was doing, I pressed call on the mystery number, holding the phone to my ear. Whoever this stranger was, they were obviously further along in a similar boat to me. A kindred spirit.
He picked up on the fifth ring.
“...Fuk ye wan?” The man muttered, voice slurring heavily, his thick accent not making it any easier to understand him.
I swallowed. I hadn't actually thought about what happened when I got this far.
“H-hey,” I stuttered, voice embarrassingly weak. “I think you texted the wrong number but…I wanted to check on you?”- Language:
