-10 years after losing his brother to the city of Ketterdam, Jordie Rietveld decides to take his fledgling worker's group, made up of other orphan train riders and former indentures, and their demands to the nation's capitol. With Wylan Van Eck sitting on the Merchant Council, and the Wraith hunting slavers in the True Sea, it finally feels like someone might actually be there to listen. Once he gets back to Ketterdam, though, he finds himself facing a lot more than he bargained for, including Merchant Council politics, gang members, and a familiar face that isn't at all happy to see him.

Somewhere far away, Sasada thought she heard a shout and the roar of some beast, and even as muffled as it was, it was enough to raise goosebumps all across her flesh. She watched Natsume rise, fast enough that his chair was thrown back, clattering to the ground with a sound she couldn’t seem to hear over the sound of the monster behind her. His arms were thrown out wide, his expression as fierce as it was scared.
She thought with a rush of warm affection, that that expression was for her. He was protecting her.
Then, the world exploded in a flash of blinding white light, and she knew no more.

When she steps into her new class for the first time, Souko spots Reiko immediately.
There’s nobody else she could be- nobody has ever fitted a name better than the splinter of moonlight sat in the corner of the classroom, with wispy silver hair and bruised shins sticking out the bottom of her school skirt. Reiko stares into the yard with a mild sense of disinterest, her eyes sharp and cat-like and Souko barely hears when she’s asked to introduce herself to the rest of the class.
