The boy at his feet breathed in ragged gasps, choking on smoke and ash. Through the roar of the fire, Ashveil couldn't hear him cough, but he could see his clouded eyes rolling back from suffocation.
He should leave.
Death would be the kinder fate.
And yet, instead of turning away, Ashveil lowered himself onto one knee beside the limp body sprawled across the rainbow-sheened pavement.
In the fading gaze fixed on him, he found no trace of despair.
Only hatred.
Had the boy possessed even a shred of strength, he would have lunged at him like a cornered animal and sunk his teeth into the hand offered to him.
Tilting his head, Ashveil snapped his fingers.
A viscous shadow peeled itself away from his own and coiled tightly around the motionless child.
A second later, the smoke-choked alley stood empty.

“That’s because you’re a terrible teacher,” Phainon says, petulance in his voice thin over affection.
Only then does Mydei fully turn to his side to face him, eyeing the way the dim light seems to catch the silver of Phainon’s hair. He reaches over without thinking. “Like this,” he mutters, thumb pressing against Phainon’s bottom lip to force the correct shape. “Your tongue here,” his touch lingers. “And don’t enunciate the last syllable too much.”
Or, when Phainon asked Mydei to teach him the Kremnoan language, he expected refusal. Much to his surprise, Mydei agrees. But as the words come easier, so does everything else Phainon was never supposed to understand.

Mydei let out a deep sigh, pinching the bridge of his nose in resignation. “Let me get this straight,” he finally said, still staring at the girl in disbelief. “You downloaded a sugar-dating app and catfished an old man using my face and body without my knowledge or permission?!”
“I only did it for fun! I didn’t expect that he would actually—”
“—and you expect me to help you and act like I was really the one he’d been texting for the past six months?!”
Absolutely unbelievable. Then again, Mydei should’ve known based on the countless expensive gifts, jewelry, and flowers that kept piling up in their apartment room—things Cipher liked to hoard.
“Uh…Yes?”
Or; Tired College Student Mydei becomes an unwilling sugar baby to one of the most powerful men in the country.
